Not much comes out when I pump

UGH! Icouldn't get anything out with the hospital grade pump(nothing) I can get about two ounces out with my manual pump. I need suggestions on how to help get more out so when I start actually going to class in Jan I can have milk for her and won't have to supplement

How is the fit of your flanges? When are you pumping?

Look into hand expression and google Stanford breastfeeding videos - they should help you out too.

The things that go on the pump? They fit comfortably & I usually pump after she eats. I've tried pumping before I feed her and that's when I can just get a little out I can put her right on and she eats and eats.

Try pumping while she nurses. She creates let down so the pump will just have to collect the milk, not work for it and rmr to relax and eat/drink something light before you start.

Re: Not much comes out when I pump

Hand expression, watch that stanford video (it is REALLY GOOD) and massage while pumping. I would pump for a couple minutes, then take the flange off and massage, then put it back and get another 1/2 oz then take off and massage, then put back and get another 1/2 oz, etc.... It really, really makes a difference to massage/hand express. Oh, and pump with the settings at a comfortable level. Turning the suction up full blast till your nipples feel like they are gonna rip off does not equal more milk. Actually, gentle stimulation is more likely to get a let-down than a forceful suction. Make sure your flanges are fitting correctly. Your nipple should sit in the center of the opening and when the pump is going, they should NOT rub against the sides. If they do, re-adjust and if that doesn't stop the sides from rubbing, you need a bigger size flange. GL Mama!

I logged on hoping that your siggy would have the age of your LO in it. How old is your LO? 2 oz is a pretty good output if you've just started pumping. The more you pump the more you'll be able to get a read on your body and what helps - compression, pics of the baby, settings on the pump - it varies for everyone.

I've tried massaging them but not taking it off and the doing it & trying again, and pumping while I nurse makes more sense. She only nurses off one side at a time so I'll give that a try in the AM.

http://www.mymilkies.com/. Maybe you can try these milkies milk catcher things. I don't have any but I just watched YouTube reviews and read some reviews on amazon and they were pretty good. You put over one nipple while you nurse on the other and it catches milk during let down fr storage. I guess this only works if you are a leaky let down person like myself !

I'll echo the advice to pump one side while you nurse on the other. Yes, it will feel like you need three hands but it's a whole lot easier to get your milk to let down with baby than just for the pump.
