My Mood:

This morning at around three am I got up to pee and my water broke. It was a lot, but not a lot (if that makes sense) I called the hospital and they wanted me to go up and get checked. Contractions started, but they weren't too bad. They felt more like really bad period pains and back pain. They lasted about thirty seconds and came every three to five minutes. At the hospital the doctor checked me and I was two centimeters dilated. My contractions stopped and I was not leaking fluid. The doctor thinks it was a tear that resolved itself, so he does a membrane sweep and sends me home and tells me to come back as things progress. Nothing happened all day. I've had contractions randomly all day but they stop and nothing happens. Tomorrow I have to talk to th doctor again and decide what to do. I think he is going to want to induce because of the water breaking. I'm terrified. Any advice/ what to expect/ anything?

My due date was march 23 and this is my first pregnancy.

Re: Advice?

Personally I'd wait it out. I'd also make darn sure no one's fingers or instruments went anywhere near my vagina just in case there is a rupture as you want to keep foreign bacteria out. You're only 40+3 that's not even hitting the average first pregnancy length. You've got time. I'd avoid an induction if possible.

Hang in there!

Re: Advice?

If I thought my water had broken, NO ONE would be going anywhere near my vagina. The risk of infection is TOO great. If I thought my water had broken, I wouldn't go anywhere near a hospital for at least 24 hours unless I was in active labor, and close to pushing.

Re: Advice?

Check out the spinning babies site and try to see if your baby is in a good position for birth. Water breaking before labor can be an indication that your baby is in a posterior position, which might make it take longer for labor to begin. Try some positioning exercises from that site, and maybe curb walking (my mom swears by jumping jacks- that's what she did after her water broke to avoid an induction).

Research shows that watching and waiting is better than induction, so I would wait and monitor his movements and your temperature- infection is the highest risk once your water has broken.

Re: Advice?

I'm on the "wait it out, keep those docs away from your vagina" wagon. Sounds like your body is gearing up for labor, and it will progress on it's own time table .

Re: Advice?

Yeah, I'm with the others. I'd give it at least another day or so before talking about induction. Try some of the more natural ways first. Walking, nipple stimulation, that kind of thing. And no more vaginal checks for sure.
