Advice please...daycare, stinks, and leaks!

DD2 started daycare this week and apparently we are the first to ever send cloth. They are totally on board with it but we are having some issues.

She is peeing through at least 1, sometimes 2 outfits each day. Some of the diapers are pretty soaked so I'm thinking that she's having some compression leaks from the excersaucer or chairs with an already wet diaper. But other diapers are not that wet. So i'd like some tips on brands (either diapers or inserts) that are bulletproof. Or suggestions as to what the problem might be b/c she doesn't leak at home.

They also complained about the smell. I was using a Leslie's boutique wet/dry bag the first two days and a planetwise wet/dry bag the other two days. They said the planetwise was better, but still smelled. BTW, I had the bags in my car all afternoon and didn't smell anything, but maybe I'm just used to smelling dirty diapers.

BTW, we are using a combo of pockets (BGs, SB, Thirsties, a few other randoms) and BG AIOs.

Stuff with a Flip organic insert and it should help. For the stinkies, you could put a liner in her diaper so that poop could be flushed. It would leave a lot less residue left behind. I bet the stinkies they are smelling are all the disposable diapers ; )! My sons school is still getting the hang of it 4mo later. They still never stick the Velcro tabs after using, and they never get it tight enough. At least they're willing to try.

are they changing her often enough? Sometimes people who are not familiar with cloth think that you can leave it on for hours and hours like a sposie not that I think that is a good idea with sposies either...but I would look into it.

That doesn't even make sense? Surely they have other kids/babies that have been there leading up to OP's baby being there, so they'd know if they had stink issues before OP's baby was there or not.

This would be my thought also. They often check for wet by squeezing the diaper and cloth doesn't feel different until its soaked.

Our dcp was using 5 cloth dipes a day before I gave up on using it at daycare - my son's body stunk for being left in dirty dipes for too long and they were losing them too. When we made the switch they used 8-10 disposies a day.

Re: Advice please...daycare, stinks, and leaks!

We have some of the same issues at daycare. Part of our problem is because they don't change him often enough. Thankfully he is starting to say something when he goes so they are changing him more. They also don't get the diapers tight enough. Often there are gaps on his thighs. Sometimes when we get home and I change him the waist is so loose that his diaper comes off with his pants! The leaks got so bad at nap time that they are now using a disposable. I'm tired of fighting so I told them that was fine but I'm not buying disposables they have to figure out a way to get them.

We have battled amonia stink some this year but even now that we have it taken care of they still sometimes say his diapers stink. I think they stink because of how they store them. Ours are in a wet bag inside a plastic pail inside a cupboard. There is no airflow and somedays they do stink when I open that door. Of course once we get them home and they are sitting in the wetbag in an open basket no more stink.

Re: Advice please...daycare, stinks, and leaks!

Before DS potty trained, we were using HH pockets at daycare. Once he turned 18 months, he turned into a heavy wetter and would leak through all the pockets. I started stuffing them with padfolded flats and then no more leaks. My DCP has never complained about smell, but i'm pretty sure she puts all the dirties in the wetbag and puts the wetbag back in his backpack.

I think frequency may be an issue. The first day she only had 3 diaper changes so I said something after that. She's been having about 5 now, but that may not be enough. I'll have to check about them flushing the liners. I don't think there is a toilet in that room.

My daycare provider too doesn't get the dipes tight enough. I'd say on average he leaks about 3-4 times a week and has to be changed into other clothing. He NEVER leaks at home.
One thing to look into is the "weebeegone" patch by weehuggers. It is supposed to help w/ ammonia stick and goes in a wet bag.

Re: Advice please...daycare, stinks, and leaks!

We've used Grovia AI2's for about a year and a half now. Maybe once a month there's a leak. I had to remind them that he should be changed every two hours and no more than three and that helped a ton.

Regarding the bag stink...well.... We use Leslie's bags and they are holding up amazing because they have been used steady and get washed twice a week. But, there is no way of getting around the stink, not even when they put the poopy ones in a plastic bag and then the wet bag. They do keep dipes in the wet bag in a separate plastic bin. The problem is they need to keep the bag closed, unlike us at home where the bag is always open.

Hope that helps.
