Breastfeeding while sick?

Sooo...my family has had this horrendous stomach virus the past few days--lots of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours. I'm getting it now. I feel it coming very soon. My dd is 8 mo and doesn't/won't take a bottle of anything. So do you continue nursing through the puking? And how?

Re: Breastfeeding while sick?

I had food poisoning when my DD was about 4 months old. I kept her in the bed next to me (thankfully she was young enough not to really want to do anything else!) and nursed her when she wanted to. When I needed to dry heave or whatever, I dragged myself to the bathroom. She was fine, and I recovered by the next day.

My DH was able to be home for part of the day, which helped tremendously. But when he was at work, I still managed. I just kept the diapers and diaper pail next to the bed, too.

The nursing baby will get some of the immunities your body is producing through the breastmilk, so nursing your dd may very well keep her healthy. I agree to try to have an adult that isn't sick take care of her as much as possible and just bring her to you when it's time to nurse.
Like pp said, try to stay hydrated, and know that your supply very well could drop, but if you keep nursing through the illness and after, and up your fluid intake as soon as you can after the illness, your supply should rebound and be just fine. Feel better soon!

Good luck mama, I completely agree with the "stay hydrated!!!!!" advice!
I just recently had a minor stomach bug (12 hours, just pooping no puking). I was so dehydrated the next day. Keep taking little sips and try a variety: soup, juice, water, gatorade, etc.
