Ah ha! Minimalism Moment

I think I just had an ah ha minimalism moment! I found this beautiful lambskin covered rocker on CraigsList that we would never be able to afford new ($450), for $60. I was thrilled and DH agreed we should get it. I fell asleep thinking, however, about how to de-clutter we need to not just get rid of stuff, but really evaluate what we were GETTING and bringing into the house. It is a large piece -- 3 feet long by 2 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide -- and we live in a studio. Alas, I decided that although it was high quality and would last through many kids, and even grandkids, it would take up too much space. My new evaluation criteria is the space versus use ratio. Will it get used enough to warrant/justify the amount of space it will take up? Therefore, a large item that gets used frequently would get more points than a large item that would get used seldom, and a small item that gets used frequently would get even more points. I am curious to try this approach for the next few months. I think it will force me to keep it simple -- getting a lot more multi-purpose items.

Good for you! I have to keep this in mind frequently too as it is so easy to say yes to nice items at an awesome price. Of course, I try to remember the K.I.S.S. method too.

Great job! I know it must have been hard to pass on that deal, but you're right, space is very valuable.

LOL - I thought you were talking about a chair - who doesn't use a chair?

That's adorable, though. But I think you made the right decision.

Great job! I have a really hard time passing up a deal... I usually end up regretting it and wanting a do-over, so I am extra impressed

ETA: I'm actually really looking forward to the DR-ish budget we're starting Jan 1st for this reason- no money for impulse purchases = less stuff in and out of the house!!

Great job! Feels good eh?
My ah-ha moment of the day is I was in the bathroom and with so much less stuff on the counter, it is so easy just to wipe clean everyday because you don't feel like you have to move everything and clean under everything. A couple swipes and I am done.
