I have, not much though. I really feel cruddy when I do so I started putting it straight into the car, too. It really does work because you can stop when it's convenient.

Re: Have you ever just thrown things out?

I have been driving around with my trunk full for two weeks =/ The thrift store I donate to is 25 min away and we don't go up that way often.

Yup. I've got a huge plastic binful in my trunk as I type. I was going to once upon a child it, but I think I'm just going to find one of those parking lot donation bins! I want it awaaaaay!

...and yes, I have thrown out a few things here and there.

I can't... too much guilt but I've totally stuck it on the curb with a free sign!

I have thought about that, but my neighbor got fined for it by our community last month.

I am going to try and donate as much as I can, but the task of getting it cleaned up and ready to go is rather daunting.

Re: Have you ever just thrown things out?

We did this in the last few weeks of our recent move. At first, we were great about donating... but as the move dragged on (their were several complications) we just started tossing things... stuff that was still in unopened boxes, tons of food from our pantry.

We still feel crazy guilty about it, but we were just TOO TIRED to deal with anything else.

Very, very occasionally I will toss something but not often. Usually I donate things of use. We have donation trucks that come by frequently so I put things out for them or take things to the thrift store.

Nope, I freecycle and Craig's list free section all the time. Weird what I offer that is taken. Old nylons, black garbage bag of mismatched socks, broken printer, deflated used Mylar balloons, water damaged picture frames. I am down to a small box of stuff that isn't wanted. Half is recyclable.
I should say I just started on the minimalist path.

I have. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I call it paying homage to the landfill gods. I know that is awful, but seriously, sometimes I have to choose between saving the environment and saving my family from chaos. That being said, I usually donate or sell. I figure if I do that with 90% of my stuff, its ok to chuck the 10% I just can't deal with sometimes.

Re: Have you ever just thrown things out?

By throwing things out, do you mean trash them? I can't do it.

I do find myself riding around with donations in the back of my van for days, sometimes weeks. Like you, if it's good stuff but doesn't go away quickly, I will end up keeping it. Not good for decluttering or minimalism.

Many thrift store/donation places (like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Disabled Vets, and local ones) will pick up your unwanted items. So you can set a date - like 2 weeks from now - and it will give you a goal and a timeframe to do things. Don't worry about washing or cleaning things, just toss them in boxes and bags and put them all in one spot - preferably a spot that you can see daily (like the living room by the front door) Then when they pick it up and suddenly your space is FREE of all the bags and boxes, you will feel such a rush and a relief! Set another date - and purge some more!
