DIY bamboo hemp fleece inserts... help!

DH is making inserts from bamboo hemp fleece. We bought two yards, washed the fabric, and were able to get 22 inserts that were 10 x 13. We decided to fold them in half, turn and topstitch them. Unfortunately, the two layers don't seem to be enough for our 20 month old so we're going to double up. This way we're only getting 11 inserts out of our fabric Anyone have any other suggestions? I hate to think we could have saved money by just buying the inserts. I just ordered another two yards for $34 (free shipping and 20% off right now) since it was on sale.

ETA: ....hmm... ok, after just talking with DH, I wonder if we needed to prep these before using them?

Sorry I don't have advice, but where did you get it from? That's a great price!

definitely prep them - I don't use bamboo/hemp but I do use them spearately and both need a lot of prep to get really absorbant (sp??)

That's still a great price even if you only technically get 11 inserts...hemp inserts at that size would be $8-10 each. You will get more absorbancy with each wash When I made my own, I just did a couple prep washes and then cut it all up to sew together then I let DS wear them and prepped more as we went That is a really good price! I may need to get some!

You need at least 4 layers for a stand-alone insert. Doublers are often just 2-layers hemp, but you need something to go with them. I always prep fabric 4-6 times before sewing, that way you know what size insert you'll end up with. Natural fibers can shrink 20%

not to hijack or anything, but I am grateful to read the advice because when my pp tree regrows, I want to get some of this for my heavy-wetter. I doubt I would've used 4 layers unless I read this. THANKS! :-)

Most hemp/bamboo fleece inserts have 6 layers + an additional 2 layers if you need a doubler
