Low tone/gross motor delays and cloth diapering...

Initially our cloth saw very little use as DD was FTT and then had heart surgery early this Fall. Now as things settle down, I'm finding I'm hesitant to use it for fear that it interferes with her already delayed gross motor ability. Am I just being paranoid? She has issues with her hips and I'm scared that the bulk will make it more difficult for her to use/coordinate/strengthen.. Thoughts/opinions?

Re: Low tone/gross motor delays and cloth diapering...

My dd has low tone and gross motor delays. We went without cloth for about 4 months this summer due to frequent hospital stays. We went back to cloth in September and in the last month she began walking! I don't feel that wearing cloth hindered her at all. If anything I would think it would give her hips more support than a disposable.

Re: Low tone/gross motor delays and cloth diapering...

My daughter is also dealing with low tone and is now (4 yrs.) pretty caught up with her motor delays. She saw a variety of therapists from 6 months on and I was worried about the diapers as well. I have 2 relatives that are pts and I asked them, the pediatrician, and two other pts that she was working with about her diapers because I would have no problem discontinuing the cloth if it was better for her. They all said the cloth was fine and one even said it was better for her hip allignment. She mentioned that if it wasn't so much work she would actually recommend the use of cloth diapers in this situation. It did take her awhile to meet her milestones, but I think it was more due to her delay than the cloth. Good luck!

DFS did cloth, and had low tone. He had twice weekly PT and she never said a word about it. They told me he'd never walk. At 2.5, he can ride a bike.

My PT says that she hates all diapers on kids, not just cloth ones. That being said, she's complimented us on our diapers before, so no problem with them according to her!

Ok-so maybe I'll get some more use out of it. It was a bit ironic, I finally had a stash nb-potty training that I was very happy with and it's barely been used.

Re: Low tone/gross motor delays and cloth diapering...

My ds was born tiny and is very low tone, but we always used cloth with no problems, even though they are very bulky on him because he is so small. He is 18 mo and just started walking, and I think that the huge diaper has helped cusion lots of falls along the way! I have heard several places that cloth diapers are good for kids becuase they can be bulky and harder to move in, they keep kids from walking before their bodys are strong enough and that helps with proper allignment down the road, i.e. the kids let their bodies determine when they walk, not just from adults teaching them, which may be one of the reasons my guys is such a late walker despite the fact that he took his first steps 4 months ago and has had the balance to walk for months according to his PT. His PT has also only had positive thigns to say about his diapers ( mostly how cute they are!)

My 12 month old has low tone. He's been in therapy for about 3 months (eating, OT, and PT). He's in cloth. I don't think it helps or hurts him to be honest. He's progressing (though not close to walking yet) and our therapists have never commented on the diapers, so (we use prefolds).
