Things for my sick baby to eat and drink?
i had a HORRIBLE flu bug yesterday, vomiting, diarrhea, i seriously felt like i was dying and couldn't hold down an ounce of anything. well, jack woke up puking this morning
he's already thrown up four times in the two hours he's been up. the only thing he's had to eat today are cheerios, and my husband gave him a little warm tea. he's thrown it all up of course. is there anything i can give him to drink, besides my breastmilk of course, that will help keep him hydrated and maybe help his tummy feel better? i couldn't even keep sprite down yesterday, so i fear there's nothing i can do for him. ![]() thanks for any advice. i just want to cry.

Re: Things for my sick baby to eat and drink?
I hate, hate, hate it when my littles get sick! I don't know if there's anything you can give him that's better than breastmilk. Since it digests quickly, there is more of a chance that he'll actually keep a little of it before he pukes.
Sorry your guy is sick Hopefully it's just a 24 hour thing

There isn't much to do while he's vomiting except nurse as much as he's willing and he will get what he can from it.
Once the vomiting passes and/or the diareah sets in, The B.R.A.T. diet is what most natural mamas have reccommended to me (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) For most these are easy to digest, or slightly binding with nutritional content. Hope he feels better soon.

Breast milk is perfect.
After a while, you can try things like dry toast, bananas, pedialyte, water, ginger ale.. But make sure to only give him small sips every few minutes or small bites every few minutes. Don't let him guzzle/gobble anything, it will just come right back up.

Re: Things for my sick baby to eat and drink?
thanks mamas
i *think* he may be feeling a bit better. he nursed during his whole nap and he's acted fine since, it's been almost an hour and NO puking! he's going to have a bit of rice for lunch, and we'll try applesauce for a snack if he keeps the rice down. otherwise, i just have to get re-hydrated so i can nurse nurse nurse.

Re: Things for my sick baby to eat and drink?
Just keep giving fluids, even if he keeps throwing up. I have had friends whose kids got dehydrated and had to go to the hospital because of that. Even if he throws up after he had something to drink, his body will absorb some of it.

Re: Things for my sick baby to eat and drink?
Just beware, apples can irritate an upset stomach. You may want to wait longer on that. Every time I give a pukey kid apples (apple, apple sauce, apple juice esp), it comes right back up. It's better to add the apple sauce once the vomiting has stopped.
Bananas are very gentle on the stomach and have vitamins in them that can help with the nasea.
