valid concern. the answer for us is no. this answer, i am sure, comes with all sorts of "depends". for example, depends on if your baby is standing or sitting. i am sure, in some cases, some babies' streams are less um...straight than others. i dont know what it is like for girls as i have a boy. but honestly, these are the best thing we have discovered for E.C.! we did not get them until just recently and our son is just now walking. so, he is loving all of the new independence that walking and split crotch pants bring - no help needed from mommy/daddy to remove diaper or training pants. it is the best!

It also depends how they're made. If they're the overlapping kind that actually covers the kid's butt, they can get a bit of pee on them. If they're the kind that's just a regular pair of pants with a split, they get less pee on them.

I love my wool split crotch pants. The wool does what wool does best and keeps itself clean for awhile (doesn't stink, doesn't feel cold and wet to the touch), while still keeping the kid warm. But they're definitely not cheap.

Also, what's the opinion of split pants vs chaps?

I've just made my own. I have some for sale on etsy, but they're larger sizes (2T). I've never tried chaps, but I imagine they'd work really well if you wanted to use a diaper over them. I coudl totally see myself using chaps at nighttime, putting an easy-to-remove diaper over them. That way the pee should stay off the pants, keep the legs warm, and make changing easy. I'm still not brave enough to have her go commando at night, especially not since we cosleep.

Fleece and wool are really good at repelling liquid if a little bit gets on them, so they don't get wet. It's like magic! I think EC Wear just got a bunch of split crotch pants and chaps in; she has wool too.

I still don't get how the wool doesn't get wet..wher edoes the liquid go? does it just hold it in whatever is worn underneath?

From what I understand, wool both repels liquid and absorbs it. When it absorbs it, the liquid goes to the core of the fabric so we don't feel it on the surface. I guess certain wool such as merino can absorb 35% of it's weight in moisture before it starts to feel wet.
