Re: perinial massage?

I've heard no, because it's unnatural (no other mammal does it), can introduce infection, and actually weakens it making it more vulnerable to tearing. Your body produces hormones when you are in labor to make it stretch during labor - not for weeks going up to it, so if you stretch it out without those hormones, you can create weak areas.

That said, I have no experience. DS1 was an epi birth, DS2 was a surprise breech.

Re: perinial massage?

I found it most helpful to practice coaching & relaxing with my dh leading up to birth. We'd give each other feedback and practice verbal coaching, tickling.massage, and take-charge. Really helped come labour time!

Thanks everyone for the input! I've already had a vaginal birth without doing the massage and had a small tear(but I was "rushing" during pushing b/c there was an emt team in my apartment that wanted to get me on a stretcher...long story!)

While I am not thrilled at the idea of tearing again, I just don't think there is enough evidence to convince me to do it. I have a lot of discomfort down there due to vulvar variscosities, and I just honestly want to leave my nether regions alone, lol.
