My baby has jaundice and in the nicu

I'm already feeling defeated and now this I didn't get to nurse him for 24 hours and bc of the stress was only getting drops. Any tips? I just had them supplement him with what I pumped and formula bc they are rising and he low on diapers.

I would say try to pump as much ad you can...drink lots of water...and try to not stress out (too much)

I just had to wipe away my tears, hang in there, and keep trying to nurse.

Re: My baby has jaundice and in the nicu

why weren't you able to nurse him for 24 hours? are you able to nurse him? Am I correct in that he is only 2 days old?

All I can say is to nurse nurse nurse when you are with him and when you are away from him to pump as often as possible (every hour if you can). That will help to bring your milk in and the frequent nursing will help with his jaundice.

Re: My baby has jaundice and in the nicu

I had this SAME EXACT PROBLEM with my ds2. He went to the NICU and was on C-PAP for 5 days and I couldn't nurse him or really even touch him. I could only pump and didn't ever really get very much until day 3 when my milk came in, then I had a massive oversupply because I was alway pumping. The NICU supplemented him with formula for the first few days which I hated. From experiencethough (all 3 of my kids have had severe jaundice) Levels seem to go down faster with formula then with breastmilk. The resident neonataligist in the NICU told me that there is something in breastmilk that actually supports babies getting jaundice. (This was the only time I have heard this though) Hang in there mama it does get better. What was the level anyway? At least he is already in the NICU for other reasons so they can just give the phototherapy while he is there. It could be worse trust me. DS1 was in the hospital 8 days under phototherapy his levels peaked at 26. Jst remember they are always drawing the level in the NICU so it's different then if they were in the regular nursery.

The best thing for getting rid of jaundice is lots of bowel movements and the best thing for bowel movements is breastmilk. Nurse as often as you can and keep pumping. Have you tried anything to boost your supply? I'd recommend some nice Mother's milk tea to also help you relax.

Hang in there mama. Sending you lots of love and good vibes.

My first had NO jaundice my second...did. I was very worried but like a pp I was told breast milk will actually hinder getting rid of it. Mine was sent home from the hospital and told me to stick her in the window. Come to find out he was just a +(&%-& and she shouldn't have came home so look at it in the way that your lo is getting taken care of
