Tie Dye Experts

I've been seeing everyone's cute onsies and I'm thinking about trying tees for the 4th.

How hard is it?
What do you recommend, process? dyes? how many colors?
Can a six year old do it?
Silly question but any way to avoid stained hands? Pots?

Re: Tie Dye Experts

I just hosted a dye party for 3 four yo's (and moms) and it was a lot of fun! They needed help with the rubber bands but they had no trouble with the dye bottles (and no mess in my carpet thank goodness). We used Procion dyes, you can buy them from Dharma or most craft stores have the kits with dyes, bottles & everything, brandname Red Rock. If you google Paula Birch you'll find tons of great how-to info with pictures. Hands---buy throw-away latex gloves. We used baking sheets to work on and then bagged the shirts in plastic grocery bags while the dye cured. Trying my first picture insert...here are a few we did. ETA, I'm no expert but we have played with tie dye a lot around here
