Learning to knit...

...is both easier than I thought it would be & slower than molasses in January

My mom got me "Learn To Knit" classes at my LYS for my birthday & I'm just getting started. Last week we did the basics & I got sent home w/ homework to practice different stitches in a sampler scarf. This week I learned to cable & practice some more. I know that the practice is important, but I just wish we were doing something slightly more useful than an ugly sampler scarf...I get it, though, I really do. I'm just impatient to make something that's vaguely cute .

Re: Learning to knit...

I hate scarves. I will never understand why they're pushed on people as beginner projects. Want to make something cute? MAKE IT. Like, right now, without permission.

Here's a garter stitch bootie (archived, so it may take a little bit to open):

Hat: http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/be...inner-hat.html

Here's a shawl pattern (PDF): http://www.purlescenceyarns.com/file...ngle_Shawl.pdf

Here's another shawl pattern which is much like the previous one but makes it obvious you can use any needles/yarn you wish:
http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting...fort-shawl.htm

(Actually, I really recommend you look through all her patterns: http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/allpatterns.htm)

Also, you can make a nice garter-stitch triangle shawl by casting on like three stitches and then just doing a yarn-over increase at the beginning of every row until you're sick of knitting.

Look at Knitting Pattern Central for a ton of patterns: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php

A good number of those will be something you can do easily and quickly--and not a scarf if you don't wanna.

Re: Learning to knit...

I totally agree with the pp. Just choose something you want and make it. In between your "homework" if you have to do that! A hat was an easy place to start for me. (I'm still a total newbie).

Did you learn english or cont. ? I croched for years before learning to knit and continental is a lot easier. I have heard if you crochet first it is the case a lot.

Continental...it actually flows well for me, but TBH, that's not the instructor's preference & I kinda feels like she's a little judgy about it.
