Positive Natural Birth Book?

I am looking for a book (or website) with positive info about natural birth. What I mean by that is, I Do Not want a book that just lists all the horrible things that can happen in a hospital, and how useless medical intervention is. I have some risk factors, and have to give birth in a hospital. I trust my providers enough to know that if I need a c section, I need it.

What I am looking for is a book about helping you to get in the right mind set, something to empower me, and maybe some techniques for dealing with the pain. I will have my doula with me, but I want to get there mentally a bit beforehand.

Thanks for your recommendations!

Birth Sense is a really good blog, although there aren't many recent posts. There is a wealth of information there, though, and it's written by a CNM who works in a hospital, so much of the advice is geared towards moms having hospital births but wanting to avoid interventions.

I really liked the Dr Sears Pregnancy Book and the Birth Book. They were my go to books from both pregnancies.

Birthing From Within.

This book was amazingly helpful to me. I cannot recommend it enough.
I also suggest perusing your local library.

Re: Positive Natural Birth Book?

I read many natural birth books, but I was searching for a balanced perspective, since I knew I'd be giving birth in a hospital setting. I really enjoyed The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer. It obviously has a strong natural slant, but I thought it provided a pretty fair analysis of different interventions, etc...

Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone! I will see what I can get from the library and then go from there.

I think there is a book, home birth in the hospital or something like that. I haven't read it but it might fit your needs.

I'd recommend The Thinking Woman's Guide... (as mentioned above) and also Ina May's Guide to Childbirth! You might also look into a Hypnobirthing book. Good luck to you!

Re: Positive Natural Birth Book?

The Pregnancy Birth & Babies website is all about positive birth experiences. I think most of them are mothers using hypnosis during childbirth, but not all of them are. There are hospital births, home births, VBACs, inductions, everything you can think of. If I remember correctly you can narrow the stories down to allow you to read about only the scenarios you are interested in. I really liked that feature when I was pregnant with DD. I just wanted to overload myself with positive experiences to draw on during labor. Hope that helps!
