Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

you know what? You said his bm got mucousy...this could be that he is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk (correct me if I have it backwards). If you are feeding every 2 hours, then he could not be getting hungry enough to suck it out till the good and fatty stuff...just a thought.

I've got a slow grower here too. He gained 6 ozs from the time he was 6 months to 9 months. It's more important to look at how your babe is doing and feeling rather than how many ounces have been gained. I have a very healthy, active, skinny boy, and you just might too.

Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

I would try doing two feedings on each side before switching. It will help if there is a fore/hindmilk imbalance and ensure DS is getting lots of the good fatty stuff. DD hasn't gained any weight from 5 months on and her ped isn't concerned at all. If DS is getting more active at all it could have something to do with it. Count wet diapers and pay attention to him, not his weight. That's the best thing you can do.

I think you are doing a great job, dont worry about the weight gain, as long as hes still a happy little guy- then I am sure hes fine !

Yes i was thinking perhaps to much fore milk as well. Perhaps try feeing him more on the first side before you switch him. Also get the formula OUT of your house!!!! Give it to a womans shelter, somewhere, just get it out. That is something you dont need hanging over your head. Good luck Momma, sounds like your doing very well!

Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

My dd seems small for her age. she is only 10lbs 13 oz and will be four months old on the fifth. She only gained about 3 ozes in the last couple of weeks. Her ped seems fine though which I'm glad, b/c I don't really want to supplelment.

Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

BF'd babies don't gain weight consistently. They gain when they NEED to gain. Both of my kids were on the smallish side (7lbs and 7lbs 6oz) and gained about 1 lb a week until around 6 or 7 weeks then gained barely 1 lb a month until they started solids. So, at 2.5 months my kids were around 13.5 lbs - but at 4 months, they were only about 14.5 and 15 lbs. And that's totally normal

My first baby I freaked out because I thought he wasn't gaining enough... my doctor disagreed, but I was still paranoid. He was a very active, very healthy child (though he had a fussy, demanding temperament). James would sometimes not gain for a month, and then suddenly gain 2 lbs in just a few days.

Anyway, long story short, if he's really hungry he'll truly let you know. He WON'T take no for an answer - he'd want to eat all day and never seem satisfied. I've learned to give my second DD a little more credit... babies just seem to know exactly what they need and when they need it.

I think more active babies start slowing down on weight gain faster than the babies that are content to lie on their backs and play all day... just a thought. Maybe your ds is burning more calories than average because of his activity level and that's totally fine! My ds is one of the most healthy, active, smart kids I've ever seen, despite his weird weight gain habits.

Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

When I saw this subject thread, I thought I could have written it! My little one is 7 months old and has been the same weight of 15 lbs 8 oz. for the last 3 weeks. He only gained 4 oz. in the previous three weeks before that. We were at the ped. a couple days ago to check for ear infection and he told me not to worry, but maybe start giving him a third solid feeding a day. We are still breastfeeding every 3-4 hrs (6 times a day), but I did start solids when he was 4 months and 3 weeks.

This thread reassured me that it can be a normal healthy thing for the babies his age to not gain quickly. He is also getting much more active - so close to crawling and moving so much, that I think maybe he's burning calories this way.

Don't worry too much! If he's mostly consistent in growth and is not falling off the charts, just know there will be good weeks and bad weeks. DD went about 3 months between 6-9 month checkups and she just barely gained a pound in that time frame. Turned out, though, that she had grown 3.5 inches in that same time! Must have been where all the calories went, huh? LOL. Maybe he's just getting taller!

Re: my son hasn't gained weight in three weeks... LOTS of questions.

I too have a little one that is a slow grower. In fact I just went to W.I.C. and they drove me nuts telling me I need to feed her this way and that way....

She was born at 36.5 weeks and was 5 lbs. and 11 ozs. Well 2 months ago they weighed her in at 13 lbs. and when I went last week she had only gained 11 ozs.

They said she fell from the 45th percentile to the 20th and was no longer following her curve for weight to height...

But I look at how my other kids are and all of them except my oldest is very tiny....
1st DD is 6 and 50 lbs.
2nd DD is 4.5 yrs. and is 25 lbs. (24 wk. preemie)
3rd DD is 2.5 and is 25 lbs
and of course baby is above..

So then they wanted to ask me about what they ate and try to tell me that it must be me and I must not eat good when I am preggo... Ugh..

Your little one might just be destined to be little too and as long as he is eating well and peeing & poohing enough and seems happy after feeds I would think he is fine too...
