I would start out at a pace where you can carry on a conversation and don't get easily out of breath. Aim to inhale for every 3 steps and exhale for every 2. If you start huffing and puffing or needing to breathe more frequently, you're probably going too fast, unless you're specifically doing speed work which should only make up about 10% total of your overall running.

I completely understand that I need to get good shoes. My husband is a runner and said the same thing. I just can't really go to him for advice on getting started because his answer is always "just start running". He has always been very well off when it comes to anything active. When he started running about 2 years ago, he just went outside and ran 2 miles.

I however can not start like that! No way, no how. We have a shoe store that specializes in running shoes, so I am going to go there tomorrow and will hopefully be able to get started then.

I am also trying the Couch to 5k, and the Hal Higdon as I don't like doing the run/walk cycles.. I just try and run as far as I can, then farther the next run day..

That's funny. I was just talking to mine today and when I mentioned my hip pain(in regards to not going running today) he goes simply, "stop running altogether." Sorry, not an option. They just don't get it sometimes huh? Everything is so black and white to a man.

I am inspired after reading this thread to start running again. I downloaded the c25k app to my phone. Now I need to make a playlist. If I can figure it out. Is the app the same as the podcast some have mentioned?

I got the Nike Lunarglide 2. They seem comfortable and like a good fit.

I'm doing couch to 5k (again) now too. I'm in week 3. I love it. I go 3 days per week with my awesome dog on a shoreline run in a marshy protected area. I'm blessed to live close enough to run there, too! We should start a c25k support group. Maybe there is already one?
