Diaper help..can i post this here??
OK ladies, I am totally new to the diaper thing and have switched my 23 month old over completely and have been doing it full time for about 3 weeks. I got used diapers with used inserts. I also got 2 boxes of econobums brand new. I use the econobums 90 percent of the time because they fit him the best. I am using charlies soap to wash them in. I do a cold rinse and then I wash them in Hot with a cold rinse and an extra rinse. On some of the microfiber inserts I can still smell pee and on one i still smell poo, on my kawaii pocket i can smell pee (and that one sheds for some reason) and the econobum covers some of them have a hint of pee smell. I am using half a scoop if detergent as told to me by the lady that sold me the diapers. Also the urine smell when I put them in the wash is VERY intense. the other day when I opened the bag and dumped them in it made my eyes water.. I wash every three days.. the smell on the inserts and covers is not super strong but i can smell it when I smell them up close.
I am thinking of boiling the microfiber inserts to get the ammonia out, I read about that on a diaper site.... Can any of you help me in this situation???? i have a little girl due next month and want to learn how to do all of this before i have 2 in cloth diapers.. |

I think this should be posted in diaper chatter, question and answer.
As far as I know, Charlie's needs oxiclean or bleach to clean your diapers properly |

Soak the microfiber inserts in a bucket of water with a cup of white vinegar overnight, then wash as usual. This solubilizes the ammonia compounds so they can wash out. Try to wash as soon as possible after they get peed on in future, because it's bacterial action over a couple of days that produces the insoluble compounds. Natural materials such as cotton don't tend to get this problem nearly as much. Hope this helps.

Re: Diaper help..can i post this here??
I use Mountain Green's F/C detergent... and have front loading washer... So it rinses less. I do a cold rinse first, no detergent.. then a Hot load with detergent/heavy load.... then I do an entire extra cycle on cold, no detergent to rinse. Once a month I strip with vinegar or bleach and often line dry outside for disinfecting/sun-bleaching.
The sun, honestly has gotten rid of more odors and stains than anything. But it depends on where you live if that's just a seasonal option.... |

A plain water wash works for me. Run a wash with just water, no soap.

I use charlies in a fl without a problem but I have 2 tips. Use the full amount. Most detergents require just 1/2 but since charlies is low sudsing, the full scoop is better. Also, when using charlies you are suppose to use it on all your laundry so that there isn't detergent residue in your washer. If there us residue, the charlies will clean that instead of the diapers. So you can either wash all laundry in charlies or add a scoop for your prewash and another scoop for your mainwash.

There's some debate on use of special soaps for cloth diapers. I use Tide and have never had a problem with my diapers. I use the max amount. Some people say you need special cloth diaper soap and to use as little of it as possible. I've tried that with some OsoCozy's I had and had HORRIBLE urine that would not leave. Now I use Tide and use how much I'd use for washing that amount of laundry and have no problems what so ever. I do a cold rinse with the Tide powder in there. Then I do the hot wash with extra rinse and line dry 90% of the time (I throw them in the dryer every so often to reseal the thread seams). Good luck. Just may not be using enough soap. I had read and read about urine smell and some "crazy" Mamas said that if you smell pee/poop then you're not using enough soap (kinda like if your dirty clothes weren't getting clean you'd use more soap, right). Well, I tried it and now I'm one of those "crazy" Mamas who say use more soap and you don't need special CD soaps either. Good luck.

Re: Diaper help..can i post this here??
I recommend stripping them all first with RLR worked wonders for my dipes afterwards I would definitely do as a poster before me stated and start using the full detergent amount. I like rockin green the best out of what I have tried and I have tried store detergents even. I think I get the best results when I do a cold rinse followed by a hot rock a soak in my RnG overnight and then just turn the washer back on in the morning and it washes and does my double rinse

Strip your dipes! It should help a lot. Then, when you do your wash cycle, don't be afraid to use two scoops of Charlie's (that is how much I use. One tablespoon is not enough). Lastly, do a cold rinse and after that, make sure your water is as hot as possible; I do a hot wash and when the machine is done filling up, I go switch the setting to the warm cycle and do an extra rinse in warm. The default is typically hot/cold. Cold water is not my friend when it comes to rinses. Hopes this helps! I've been using this system for about two years and things are going great.
