SS card nme change question
I feel like an idiot. We finalized our daughters adoption in September. With all the excitement we totally forgot to have her name changed on her SS card. I am supose to have our taxes done today and will need that! Now long does it take to get the new card or for it to be in the system? She will have the same number, just a different name...this was a Foster adopt if that makes a difference. Also, how much does it cost?

Re: SS card nme change question
I just did this last week. You will need to go to the SS office and take copy of new birth certificate, adoption decree and 2 other forms of ID (check SS website). I took our insurance card which had his new name and his Medicaid card with new name but there are other accepable ID.
Anyway, it is FREE and goes in effect at midnight the day you file. It was quick and easy. I filled out the application there but I think you can on line too. You may be able to do everything online but I'm not sure. We have a SS office close by and it is pretty much like going to the BMV Good luck, no need to worry.

Re: SS card nme change question
I think you have the choice to change it or keep it. We kept ours so it wasn't a big deal and always used that number. His birthparents applied for the card at the hospital and gave it to us. For foster care, you may want to have it changed if you have a close adoption for safety reason. Just look online as they have the form and what you need to bring. I pre filled out the form, and it was just a matter of standing on line and a quick few minute meeting with staff. They mailed the new one to me. The line wait was long but it was probably about 45 minutes.
