how far would you drive?

...to a hospital or birthing center. It would obviously be for appts and birth.

Keep in mind I live in the boonies and there is *nothing* close that I'd feel safe using (one hospital 15 min away but misdiagnosis is a common issue).

I'm looking at a practice (obgyn and com) an hour 15 away or a birthing ctr 1:35 away. Last birth was an hour away (opposite direction) but I didn't like the practice.

I drive 1 1/2 hours. To my Dr and the hospital she delivers at. I did the same thing with my other 2.

Re: how far would you drive?

I drive about 30-40 for appointments & am aiming for a hb to avoid the hour long drive to the hospital in labor.

I would do an hour. Is homebirth an option for you?

I'm not sure about hone birth. Kinda scared something would go wrong (like last time) and we would be far (an hour) from a decent hospital. Oh how I hate where we live!

Oh, last birth was 36 hours of labor, baby OP, 8 cm of dilation, and then a C-Section. I did all I could, she wasn't coming out the old fashioned way

Re: how far would you drive?

I drive 1.5 hours to the birth center. In traffic, it's sometimes closer to 1 hour and 45 mins. It's the closest birth center in Louisiana, but it's still across the state line in Texas (our midwifery laws suck). There are about 5 hospitals along my route, so if something went wrong along the way, I at least have that as backup.

It DOES seem like a long drive sometimes, but I waited 1 hour 45 mins in a waiting room to see a specialist last year. I have frequently waited half an hour to see my own OB. I never wait to see the midwife after that long drive. So for me, the drive for the midwife and the waiting room time for the OB pretty much balance each other out.

Plus, there is a restaurant on the way home that has awesome creme brulee, so that totally makes the drive worth it.

Re: how far would you drive?

The 2 hospitals where I am considering delivering are an hr or so away (1 distance-wise, the other with DC traffic). The appts would be there too. Trying for a HB, but still would have to travel a bit for apts

Ha So a pregnant woman response!

Thanks ladies for your responses, I'm reading them all. Its definitely helpful. I will say, I can't imagine fighting through traffic (or even my husband doing it) while in labor... Of course, I hate DC traffic! For me the only traffic I get is somebody going slow in front of me

I travel an hour+ right now for my OB. We're moving though, so it will be a much shorter drive very soon.
