average hospital costs?

I know it's probably all different all over the country, and different births will have different costs etc. but we're new to the country and I've just found out our insurance doesnt cover 100%. We were in Scotland for the twins and it was all 100% free.

So I was wondering what were your hospital costs and what kind of birth. just so I have a random idea when I break the news to DH!

For both my c-section and vaginal with epidural it was just our hospital admission copay for our insurance. DD1 also had hospital copay because she stayed in the NICU longer. $300-400.

Our copay is 10%, for the whole hospital bit, so would the 300-400 (above) mean everything? The ob's office was saying that the hospital will bill us for everything - like the nursery, the anethesiologist... etc etc

Re: average hospital costs?

Do you have a deductible to meet first? And then beyond that do you have a coinsurance?
With DS's birth we had a $25 copay for the initial pregnancy diagnosis, a $500 deductible, and then we were responsible for 20% coinsurance beyond that. When it was all said and done we paid somewhere around $2400ish for my c-section.
With this birth our insurance has changed and we have a $35 copay for the initial pregnancy diagnosis, a $2500 deductible, and then we are responsible for 30% coinsurance beyond that. So if I had another c-section we'd be responsible for $5500 (our max oop). I'm attempting a VBAC though, and if it is successful we'll be responsible for somewhere between $4500-$5500.

Re: average hospital costs?

Typical charges for a vaginal birth would be about $10-$20k, depending on how long you're there and how much "extra" stuff you get - pain meds, etc. Insurance discount might knock it down to $5-$10k, and you'd be looking at 10% of that amount.

Our insurance had a $200 deductible, $2000 out of pocket max, and 20% coinsurance for drs appts, 10% for hospital inpatient stuff. I met the out of pocket so essentially paid $2000, then her billing was entirely separate after she was born, though not NEARLY as much $.

Re: average hospital costs?

I had a $2500 deductible plus 20% so i ended up having to pay quite a bit. about $1350 to the ob, part of that was the insurance denied my 20 wk ultrasound so i had to pay for the whole thing. $1800 to the hospital for my bill and $250 for the baby's bill, $130 for my epidural and i somehow ended up having to pay around $35 for her hearing test.

So around $3565 total. That was just 8 months ago and I'm still paying the Dr and the hospital every month trying to get it paid off because I'm pregnant again. This time my deductible went up another $200 and each person has a deductible instead of the family so the baby's bill will be about $1,100 I think and mine will be $200 more.

Oh and I had a vaginal delivery with no complications and left the hospital 24hrs after she was born.

Re: average hospital costs?

I've just found this information on the coverage booklet.

it says - deductables - none
inpatient hospital expenses - 90% of allowable amount.
Co−Share Stop−Loss Amounts (out of pocket) $4000 per individual/$8000 per family

So given what pp's have said if the average cost is 10-20k, then I would pay 1-2 thousand? does that sound right?

If all goes well that would be right. There were complications with my first so the pre-ins bill was 34k so you would have had $3400 of that bill. Your ob office can usually give you an estimate.

Re: average hospital costs?

Great thanks everyone. I was starting to panic a bit and was thinking about ways I could cut the cost down, but i don't think that taking my own pain killers in would make much of a difference hehehe

Re: average hospital costs?

It varies according to the hospital also. 13 years ago in a small town my daughters emergency c- section cost a total of about $3000. 8 months ago my sons emergency c-section on a large hospital in a large city cost a total of $34000. Both were before insurance costs. I got to see the bills before insurance picked up their share.

I know prices have gone up but not 11 times the price. So if you are low risk a small hospital may be cheaper for you.
