Considering HS, Overwhelmed and Lost!!

We are considering homeschool for my DD who will be in the 6th grade next year. She also has APD(or CAPD). We (I) put a ton of effort in helping her with her struggle with school. She attended public school K-4 and is now in attendance at a Christian School. She is doing better this year. BUT...we "preview" all of her lessons, it is repeated at school, then reviewed again at home. Poor kid is on overload - and frankly, so is mama!

I don't know anything re: homeschooling. How do I start? Where do I look? What do I need to know? I found this forum when considering cloth diapers and I thought weeding through that was difficult!

Thank you for any advice!

Re: Considering HS, Overwhelmed and Lost!!

I know how you feel! It can be very overwhelming at first, quite similar to navigating the cloth diaper world for the first time!

The first thing you need to think about is what kind of approach you want. Do you want to piece together your own curriculum or go with something all in one that is totally prepared for you? Do you want to follow the public school model or do your own thing at your child's pace? Religous or secular? An excellent tool for figuring all that out is a book called 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum by Cathy Duffy. She has take little quizzes to narrow down what you want, and then reviews multiple curriculums so you can make your choice. If you aren't religous though, it does have a Christian bent.

You'll need to look into homeschool laws for your state to determine if there is anything you need to do. In my state, you simply have to register your homeschool as a private school in a residence. Some states require things like periodic testing or that you teach so many hours in a year.

Once you get all that figured out you can start researching specific curriculum options and of course ask here for opinions on different ones.

Hope this helps!

My Dd has CAPD also. We're going to start hsing in the fall for 9th grade. She went through the curriculums and picked switched on schoolhouse. She can put on her headphones and follow with verbal instructions or she can read it herself. The interactive set up is what works for her.

Re: Considering HS, Overwhelmed and Lost!!

Hello there Vickie!

Welcome to the homeschooling forum.

I gotten some great advice so far from some other families. I am going to add that yes, homeschooling is overwhelming at 1st when you don't know what you should be selecting as far as a curriculum or what the laws are for your area.

I am going to suggest you try to see if there is a homeschooling group in your area. It is nice to have that support in the beginning. Also keep reading this forum and try to see what different homeschooling families do.

There are homeschooling fairs that might help you out as well.

My suggestion is to start off slow. You might even want to consider a period where you let your DD deschool so she can just relax before starting up homeschooling. Another suggestion is to try to join a homeshooling group now so your DD can get an idea of what it will be like to be homeschooled and can look forward to it in the fall.

Best wishes and feel free to ask us more questions!
