Websites for sewing on/fixing/buying vintage sewing machines?

Someone told me needlebar, but the first thing stated is it's not at all for sewing, buying, or fixing. I can't find any websites at all, the only place I keep ending up at is the bay. TIA!

I just bought at 185k3 singer and it works I'd just like a website to learn how to take care if it, and really really understand it. DH might is interested in fixing some in the future as well so just a general site more or less.

this blogger also owns a shop, she appears to work on a lot of vintage Singers

This is NOT my blog and I am not associated with it in any way

It is the only one I could find parts for my vintage Kenmore on.

There are a bunch of manuals for that machine available on ebay. You need to clean it on a regular basis - remove any lint that builds up particularly around the bobbin area.

You will also need to oil it every so often. Use one drop of oil wherever there is an oiling hole in the outer casing of the machine. Also lean the machine back so you can get underneath it and put a drop of oil on each place where metal moves against metal.

Enjoy your "new" machine - it looks gorgeous!

I don't know of any blogs - but if anyone does!!!

I'd do an ebay and youtube search for your model number.

Re: Websites for sewing on/fixing/buying vintage sewing machines?

There is a yahoo group called WeFixIt (or something similar) and that might be a good place to go for help with fixing stuff. In terms of sewing groups, apart from here, there are numerous other groups for people who sew with particular types of machines or with particular interests on Yahoo and also Quiltropolis.

If you go to the Singer Manual search here: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals and type in "185", the manual for the 185J/K should be free to download (about 4th return from top). The manual does include instructions on how to clean and care for the machine.

This document covers the basics of sewing machine maintenace: http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_c/c-102.pdf . The principles are the same for almost all machines(the machine's manual usually tells you what you can/cannot maintain yourself).

Most sewing books also have at least a chapter on basic machine maintenance.
