When do chickens stop laying?

I'm looking at a few different flocks. I figure I want to buy a young flock but I don't know what young is. At 2 year old chickens old ladies already?

2 years is old in terms of their productive life. Chickens can live into their teens and lay the odd egg, but as for laying daily 2 years they are past their prime. For example, commercial poultry farms don't keep chickens past age of 2.

We just lost a hen that has kept laying and was still a great broody hen last spring. She was an adult when we got her and we had her nearly 4 years.Wait, actually it would be 5 years in two months.

Several of our other hens are 3+ years old and still laying. They don't lay an egg for every day of the year but neither do our younger hens. I love my older hens.

I'm not sure I would buy older ones though when young ones are as inexpensive as they are.
