Help...reddness
3rd post, but I figured breaking it up into separate posts was best since they involved different things.
Today is only our second day with CD and my LO had really bad redness on his testicles. He's occasionally gotten redness in between his pubic area and thighs or by his anus, but quick coat of California baby and it was handled. He's never gotten redness above his penis or on his testes before. All the diapers were new. I prewashed them with maybe 1/4oz of bumgenius detergent, then dried. The natural/hemp I washed 3-5 times with the BG detergent and the last wash was without detergent. Other than these prep washes I haven't done anything with them. We have soft water (from a water softener). Any reason why this is happening. I put him back in a disposable tonight with some diaper cream. He was walking different today and I didn't know if it was because he was hurting or just because of the bulk

Re: Help...reddness
are you using prefolds, fitteds, pockets?? how often are you changing?
before 6 mos, my LO could wear any diaper, fitteds, snappi'd prefolds and flat folds, and pockets mainly - no rash issues. once my LO got active (crawling, walking) i put him in looser pockets and fitteds (2 mos or so) so the wet dipes won't chafe too bad until his skin got use to all the friction (i started to notice small red chafe spots). i also change every 2-3 hours, sooner if diaper is soaked or after a bowel movement to avoid too much ammonia/poo to skin contact. i also use CJ's butter twice daily for added skin protection and nice smell i mainly use natural fibers and some microfleece. my DS at 18 mos is in padfolded flats and cover, my DD at 6 mos is in snappi's prefold bikini twist with fleece liner and cover.

It could be a sensitivity to wetness, not changing enough, sensitivity to detergent, or the diapers might not be getting clean enough ie. Bacteria still left over.
I'd try a barrier cream at every change, and change more often. If that didn't work I'd look into the detergent.

Re: Help...reddness
I've only washed once with a tiny amount of detergent, so unless it was because I didn't do a rinse without detergent after, I doubt it was the detergent-but really I have no idea.
He's not really a heavy wetter, but it could be not changing enough. I have him with a nanny during the day and were all getting used to it, so that could be an issue. My LO is 14 months, very active. We're trying out pockets, & prefolds (fuzzi bunz, econobums, flips, thirsties, and BG Freetime AIO. |
