Those who had Good/Great Inductions?

Because of some medical reasons (previously shattered tailbone and hernia that is getting worse), I may have the option for an induction instead of waiting to see if baby rips my hernia open worse.

Just wondering for mama's that have had good/great/successful inductions, are there any? I know many mama's prefer to go into labor naturally if they can self-induce at home, but I have tried a couple things, and they didn't work. I'm not really for inducing at home, as I have done that previously, and I really think it is what caused my LONG, VERY painful labors.

How was your induction? What was used? Did you get an epidural?

Re: Those who had Good/Great Inductions?

mine was wonderful

I was already pretty dilated though and not contracting (found out with the next baby my body just does this a few days before labor begins). They used pitocin only, since cervix was already soft and dilated to 5-6cm. I did opt for an epi, but now that i've experienced natural childbirth, i think i could have done it without the epi, i was just afraid. DS was born just over 3 hours from the first contraction that i felt.

I can't even begin to tell you what a relief it is to read this!!

I have my DS (who was somewhat induced), and 2 surro-daughters, both all-natural labors. With DS, I was in false labor on my due date for 24 hours, and they decided to induce me with pitocin, and it wasn't bad.

The all-natural labors were long and hard, and so very, very painful. So I know what pain is. And I find some comfort in knowing I can get an epidural if I'm induced (stayed home too long with #2, and #3 was home birth).

I will need the softening/dilating meds, as my body refuses to dilate and efface, and that is why my labors are SO long. But I actually think it will speed up the process a ton, and make my labor easier and since I can get an epi if I want, maybe less painful. I won't do any other drugs (like demerol), they were AWFUL with my first, and made feel insane and not 'all together'.

I've never even considered an induction before, but may because of my hernia. It's right where my belly button is, so it could cause long-term problems if it gets bigger now.

My appt. is tomorrow afternoon to talk to my OB. I was almost induced on Friday with high blood pressure, but it came down. I was excited to think about holding my newborn, but so scared because all you hear about is scary induction stories, a lot that end up with c-sections.

Re: Those who had Good/Great Inductions?

I too had a good experience with induction and had been so afraid of long, hard labor. But, with first son, had a long hard labor with no induction and an epidural. This time with the induction, labor was much, much shorter and I had to go natural because there was no time for an epi. I was dilated about 3-4 cm when they induced me, used pitocin only and things started rolling fast after that. Still, second time around much better than the first, honestly.

My second was induced. I was ten days past my due date and things were starting to deteriorate a bit. I was already dilated to 4 cm before I was induced at the hospital. I went in that am and had them put in the epidural right around he same time that they started the pitocin drip. Ten uneventful hours later, my baby was born. Pleasant, no complications, and much easier than my first birth.

I'm an all natural girl but when baby 3 was 5 days late and measuring over 9 lbs (I'm very petite), I opted to have my water broken. I had been contracting for weeks and was already 5-6 cm when they broke my water. It took 2 hrs of walking the halls before labor started, but she was born less than 2 hrs later. No iv, no drugs. For an induction - I thought it was smooth.

DS1 was an induction at 39+6 weeks due to obstetric cholestasis. Everything went as planned... I won't lie, it was the worst L&D I've had, because I was stuck in the bed, unable to move and get comfortable. My total labor was 17 hours, including 1 hour and 5 minutes of pushing. No vacuum, no forceps, no c-section. Basically, none of the horror stories you usually hear.

Given the scary medical reason for my induction, I am happy with how everything went. I wouldn't choose an elective induction, but I would feel comfortable being induced again for medical reasons.

Three of my four have been inductions. All of them were fine with no complications. With #1my water broke, they started pit, and he was born four hours later. #2 they started pit, broke my water after about 4 hours, and she was born 4 hours later. #3 was a much longer labor, 21 hours. My water had broken, four hours later no labor so we started pit, I was up and moving around, but got stuck at 6-7cm for about 5 hours and it had been 19 hours since my water broke. I got an epi and had her 2 hour later.

My last labor was great and I was induced due to suspected large for dates baby. I went in at 39 weeks and 3 cm &80% effaced. Started pitocin at about 7:15....got a epidural shortly after when contractions from the pit started, had her at 9:57 am! So about 21/2 hours total!
