prewashing GMD unbleached newborn - how many times?

I am prewashing some GMD unbleached flats along with some unbleached newborn sized prefolds. I've washed and dried 4 times now. I am just wondering how many times I really need to wash these to be considered sufficiently prewashed? I am not going to boil so just info on washing/drying please. They are starting to be quilty but I am sure they will get much more so. Just not sure when I can say it is good enough for now.

Per Karen's (GMD) recommendations, we washed and dried our unbleached prefolds 6 times.

I boiled mine in a large pot with a squirt of dish soap, for about 15 to 20 minutes...than washed and dried them twice. They fluffed up really nice and I didn't have to do 6 loads...

I washed my smalls twice, dried them, washed them again, washed them with regular diapers and dried them. Absorbency hasn't been an issue though they definitely quilted up more with the next couple of washes.

So basically...you'd probably be fine to use them and let them quilt up/get more absorbent as you do laundry, or even just toss them in with towels (not tried on my part).

I did 4 and then started using them. Even though they will gain more absorbancy, most newborns aren't super soakers.

What don't you like about boiling them?

I would say they are good for now. A couple uses and washes and you are good to go!

Agree, they are good enough to start using them (especially for a nb)! As long as you washed on HOT or boiled them. I also find that natural detergents will take longer.

My test is to pour some water on them or try to soak up a puddle of water- if it still beads up, wash some more. If it soaks in pretty well, you are good to go.
