Question wanting to wean at 9 months.

I had been formula feeding my almost 9 month old son since 3 months old, and I've been feeding him baby food twice a day and oatmeal at night since his 6 month app.

well he is starting to wean himself off the bottle! I don't know what to do. He will NOT use a sippy cup yet. his pee has a terrible odor, probably because he's not getting enough liquid. He will drink 6 ounces in the morning and MAYBE 6 ounces all day after that. He refuses to drink it! He just cries and cries and wants baby food.

sigh.

any ideas?

I'm going to call his ped. Monday

While it's normal for babies to go through phases like this, it really doesn't sound like he's taking in enough. Silly question, but have you tried a larger nipple size? How about a new bottle/sippy to make it a little more exciting? Are his ears ok? Maybe instead of offering full bottles every 3-4 hours or whenever, try 2-3 oz every hour?

I had several different bottle nipple sizes and that doesn't seen to make a difference :-/
I could try the every 2 hour feeding though!

I would try a bunch of different sippy cups and maybe take out the spill proof valve so he can get the fluid easier. Also, feed him wet food, like watermelon so he gets fluid. good luck mama this must be stressful for both of you!

Also, try oatmeal or another cereal with formula (if you are using water) as that counts as formula. I'd try the Nuk soft clear tip sippy cup. Its the most bottle like/easy to use. We found it went in spurts and I wouldn't worry too much just yet. You could also give a bit of water if you are worried about the pee (I didn't at that age).

Have you tried an open cup? DS2 LOVES drinking water out of a cup. DS1 never liked a sippy cup, but did great with cups with straws at 8 months. You could also give him a wet washcloth to suck off of just to try to get a little more fluid into him. Or maybe applesauce with extra water mixed in to trick him.

mama, this must be so frustrating for you!

Also, my LO was refusing her bottle when she got an ear infection. Just if he's at acting odd, you might think about it.

Thanks for the ideas! His top 4 teeth are almost through, so I'm wondering if that's a problem as well.
I have been making all the oatmeal with formula so he gets more
I'll have to try the regular cup thing!

Maybe he has an EI or another illness that is causing him to refuse. I would also try different kinds of sippy cups until you find something that works. Maybe a straw one would work.
