Animal behavior before labor
So my little shih tzu has suddenly started acting like a guard dog. She just started patrolling the back yard yesterday. (something she never did before) and today when I started vacuuming, the dog that has cowered in fear for four years at the vacuum and always huddles on top of the couch actually followed the vacuum around like she was keeping an eye on it. Even if I vacuumed towards her she would back away but would not run and hide. She would come right back to follow me around the house as I vacuumed. It made me wonder if animals or dogs can sense impending labor.
I am not expecting to go early, just wondering if its because I am approaching my due date, or if my dog got brave all of a sudden.

my cats stay away from me when I am pregnant, for some reason I can't stand looking at them! Oiut goes away after I have the baby, but it happened every pregnancy (our cats are 12 and 13 yrs). They don't do anything, yet I get the urge to kick them... Animal lovers, I DON'T ACTUALLY DO IT!

Re: Animal behavior before labor
Growing up we had a chow chow that had a sense about things. He knew when we where sick and would make sure we stayed in bed and he would even cover us up...We had my grandpa living with us for a while and the dog NEVER liked him and then all of a sudden he wouldn't leave his side or stop wimpering. Two days later my grandpa had a heart attack (he recovered from it just fine). He also would know when my little brother was going to have a seizure. Kinda crazy stuff like that. Oh, and my dad has a lot of his siblings that have drug and alcohol abuse issues and the dog wouldn't let them in the house if they had been using. Mom loved that one

Re: Animal behavior before labor
One of our dogs has been through a new baby before, the other has not. The one who has got this look of "oh crap" when we pulled the crib out.
The newer dog has been peeing right outside of the baby's room for the last few days, and has already chewed up a number of baby items. Both are totally out of character for her. And, she has gone to great lengths to get at the baby items, as they were on high tables, etc. seems like we might have some jealousy to deal with. She has also been clingy, and wants to sit right on top of my tummy. Last nig during baby's active period she got kicked off of it, and looked very upset with me. All in all they will be happy when the baby turns into a toddler tht wants to play with them. Before that, not so much! |

Re: Animal behavior before labor
my mini schnauzer has her clingy moments...but she is sooo in the need of a bath that I have to stay away from her...i just dont have the energy to give her a bath and will be calling the groomer today to set one up for her...we are all going to get haircuts next week...me and dd1 on wednesday and even DH if he is around...dd2 doesn't get her hair cut yet...i wait til at least 2yr old for thier first haircut...i just can't stand to think about getting it done any sooner and I think a haircut changes their looks sooo much...i like the cute natural baby hair!!! I have always said little boys at 1 and girls at 2...we shall see how long i put off this LO's first hair cut!!
with both of my other pg i can remember the dog starting to want to be closer to me toward the end of the pg...that seh would have to be right by my feet if she wasn't in my lap...maybe dogs do know when the time comes!!I know for them during their pg that they start nesting a couple of days before the big event....so maybe they get clingy to us before hand too! dd1 just threw a HUGE fit wanting icecream...i have no idea where she came up with that one...but she just would not accept the fact that she would not be getting any icecream...she is way tired!! i just put her to bed...she is too fussy and tired to even eat lunch and i sooo can't deal with a crying child at the table today!! sooo she can eat with she gets up...plus with her beign soo tired anyway she wouldn't eat much...and after a nap she will chow down!

Re: Animal behavior before labor
I know I rarely post anymore... went back to work for awhile...
Anyways... our dog totally knows. This is baby #3 for her and she gets super protective about 2 weeks before and freaks out the day of. The other night she was freaking out on me.... wouldn't leave my side, head in my lap, pacing. An hour later contractions started. They lasted a little over 2 hours before going away, but she knew.
