Re: constipation and c sections
Yup I had constipation from both the c-section and the opiate based pain meds that I took when I went home. A stoop softener helped. As soon as I stopped taking the Tylenol with codeine, I was regular again.
Opiates slow down digestion and makes stool move through the intensties too slowly. The body removes too much liquid from the stool, thus resulting in constipation. Fiber make help a little, but increased water intake will help much more.

Whole milk and stool softeners. The fat from the milk got things moving. Tip from one of my nurses!

Re: constipation and c sections
They gave me stool softeners in hospital. I need to pick some up tomorrow ASAP to continue taking them (was just released today). I was also on iron, and percocet can make you constipated along with iron, so thinkign it'll be awhile before I have a BM!

Re: constipation and c sections
I wasn't required to have a BM before leaving, but I think I had one the next day at 4 days PP. I was given stool softeners and gas-x along with my other meds on a schedule by the nurse and we bought both of those at the drugstore on the way home. I think I kept taking them until 1.5 weeks PP just to keep myself comfortable.

Re: constipation and c sections
With my most recent, 4th c-section, I had the worst constipation EVER. I had DS on Monday afternoon in a planned c-hyst (I had placenta increta) and was released from the hospital on Friday. I was in horrendous pain all night Friday night and finally on Sunday morning DH went to the pharmacy and brought home some Miralax. It worked really well. I had been on colace the entire time, but it just wasn't enough this time.

Re: constipation and c sections
I have been in 2 different hospitals with each baby one in PA and the 2ds in Ohio and both made me have one before they would even let me eat solid foods, so I tried as soon as I was allowed up to walk, and tried so hard I got a hemroide
but I wanted to eat so bad since I couldn't from midnight before the c/s till I went. I may sneek some stool softners in with me this time too

Re: constipation and c sections
They gave me Ducolax every day and I had a BM on the 3rd day with both of my DDs. But it was not required to leave the hospital. You just had to be passing gas.

Re: constipation and c sections
Ive had 3 sections. My life savor was fountain drinks like from the gas station. They contain a ton of syrup and it does wonders!!

Ok so I wasn't require to have a bm before leaving hospital but I sure wish I was. Cuz next night after being released I was in Er getting an enema. Sucked. Well I also had a 104 fever due to infection. But the enema was way worse than the pain from infection.
I will def be asking for colace or something next time. |
