Re: What spontaneous things do you do with/for your kids?

I make pancakes with dd1 and dd2. They love to help me cook and pancakes are their favorite! So every so often, we have pancakes for lunch or dinner and they help me mix up the batter and flip the pancakes

Dh is pretty spontaneous and we've planned trips in a matter of hours. On Black Friday 2010 I went shopping from 10pm to 5am and when I got home dh wanted to go to Reno for a 3 day weekend. We were on the road by 2pm I think. Pretty good for having 5 kids (and we rented a car!)

Re: What spontaneous things do you do with/for your kids?

I put on my iPod an we have dance parties while making dinner (sometimes after dinner or after a particularly difficult day)

We go to the splash pad in summer (need to find one here)
Visit the pet store and get a new fish (we have a large tank)
Last week we planted flowers, I gave them each a cup of wildflower seeds to do what they wished
They like to paint so last weekend while dd was at a friends ds and I painted durin ds2's nap.
I'll also randomly break out the ice pops when it's hot out for a little rehydrating treat.

I think tomorrow we will take a surprise ice cream trip..mostly bc I want ice cream

We go for Italian ice, or to the beach after school(kiddo's school is located on the water, perfect location), or the other night we went to play putt putt and arcade games.

Re: What spontaneous things do you do with/for your kids?

I have one with aspergers, so he and I don't do much that's spontaneous. Though, last week, I pulled the other two out of school and took them to the beach. It was 80+ out in new England in march... Very worthy of a beach day IMO. It wasn't truly spontaneous, as I let the teachers know, and had to plan... But it was a last minute decision.

Re: What spontaneous things do you do with/for your kids?

Just Thursday night, DH had his band over in the basement for practice and I stopped cleaning the kitchen and got DD and DS2 up and we had a dance party while the band played. They loved it, lol.

We bake cookies or cupcakes spontaneously.
Trips to the park.
Library dates - they loooove these.
I'm secretly planning a zoo trip for this coming week since it's Spring Break!
I also bought some flash cards (colors and shapes) and am planning a game for them to play.
Play-doh fun.

Just every now and then I stop our plans and take a time-out for fun. I don't let them know ahead of time, and most of the time I don't even plan it myself. We just do it. The kids love the surprise and the break from their routine for some good fun. I make sure I'm 100% focused on them and what we're doing, too. Not doing the "uh huh, that's cool!" thing while cooking dinner at the same time.
