Yeah, that. I have heard of using lanolin, but extreme pain and bleeding is a sign of a bad latch, not unprepared nipples.

Re: Any way to prepare nipples for bfeeding??

Paper clips...ummm have to try that!!!

I was told when I had DD(6yrs ago) #1 to expose them to the sun!! #2 use a very soft baby hair brush on them to help toughen them up!! I did the brush, not the sun!
Now I need to go find that brush and start toughening them up, LO #3 is coming!!!

There's nothing you can really do to "prepare" them. Proper latch is what you need to watch for with your baby. Have them open big,and wide and take as much breast as possible and lips flanged out.

Thanks for the tips DD's latch never changed, I was fine after a few days and she nursed for over 2 years, I just assumed that it was that my nipples were just getting used to being used again, lol. I don't remember problems with my first.

I didn't have any cracking or bleeding, but did have extreme, toe-curling, made-me-want-to-scream pain for about 8 weeks. It wasn't a bad latch, I had 2 nurses (well, plus my sister and her friend who are also nurses), 2 moms, my midwife, DD's ped and a LC confirm that DD's latch was textbook perfect. Sometimes it just hurts.

Jeez, I hope it didn't hurt like that during the entire nursing session. I had the toe-curling for a few seconds after he latched, but it only lasted a couple of weeks if I remember right.

I have never been sore after my first. You might be just fine. There was 5+ years between my last two.

Yep. Entire time, every time for about 8 weeks. Now she's 5 mo. and it rarely hurts at all, but I didn't know how I was going to get through those first few months.
