Big Kid Bed?

What age did your kiddo get moved to a toddler bed/big kid bed? We have a newbie due in July and DD is still in the crib. We won't buy a new one. We have a cosleeper so I plan on using that for the first few months.. But I was wondering when you all make the transition and how to even go about that? It seems like a nightmare I remember my sister would never stay in bed. Lol

Re: Big Kid Bed?

DS1 went to a twin bed just before he turned two so DS2 could have the crib.

DS2 went to a twin bed right about age two.

We don't do toddler bed. I really don't see the point since they are the same size matress as the crib and the boys were getting to big for the crib. Why spend more money on something they would only use for a very short time.

We did race car beds for the boys so the mattress sits below the sides so no need for rails or worry about them falling out.

Both did amazingly well. Really no major issues of getting up out of bed or going to bed.

Around 1 for us. Ds tried climbing out of his cot and would get stuck half way. We took the sides away and never had any issues. In fact for the first couple of weeks i'm not sure he even realised he could get out if he wanted! When he did, we got him a groclock, he always stays in his room until the sun comes up so no issues there...

Re: Big Kid Bed?

I am totally jealous of the ease of the first two posters. With DD1, she tried to climb out around 15 months so after an awful night, I went and bought a crib tent. I know a lot of people call them baby cages but she loved it. We called it her special cave and she started sleeping 12 hours overnight too. She stayed in that until she was a couple months past 3 (our crib is a few inches longer than most). We transitioned her because we did not want to give her bed to DD2. We actually moved her to a miniloft with a dollhouse cover so it was like getting a bigger version of what she had and she never got out or had an issue. I think a lot of that was age.

With DD2, she did not climb out until around 22 months so we had neglected to put on the crib tent. She was so good at following directions, we went for the toddler bed conversion and after two nights of a litttle silent return (less than 20 times each night), she stayed in......until 24 months when she suddenly seemed to realize that she could get out and play. For almost three months, we silent returned each night for hours, tried putting her in with her sister, etc. Then I got out the crib tent and put her in it. For two nights, she protested abuot being trapped. After that, she decided it was fun and now she is "safe" in it. She gets upset if we forget to zip it shut.

Now that DB3 is on the way (due Oct), we plan to get bunk beds for the girls late this summer. My hope is that nearer to 3 years, we will not have the issues we had at two. With DB3, I will put the crib tent on at 12 months.

So I guess the moral of the story is get ready to silent return like a champ and get whatever size bed in whatever configuration works best for the personality of your kid. I suggest something that they would want to stay in like a canopy bed, car, train, whatever.

I would also do it a couple months before you intend to use the crib for the new baby too so that you are not taking the crib away.

Good luck!

Re: Big Kid Bed?

We did it a few months after age two. It wasn't as big of a deal for us as others. The first few weeks, I don't think he realized he could get out and once he did he just grabbed toys and played. We have a baby gate at the door. In hindsight I probably would have done it around 20-24 months but listened to all the warnings.

We didn't transition and just looked at each other when squirt was jumping very well in the crib, husband grabbed the drill and it was done. It was more traumatic for my husband than anyone as I was ready.

I also wish I just went to a twin. We converted the crib and there is no way to do a rail so he's fallen out a few times (more at first, but on a rare occasion now) and the crib is higher. I had no clue. In the next few months I'm going to buy him a twin once I decide what bed i want.

Re: Big Kid Bed?

My boys would probably have been content to stay in their cribs but they roll around so much they were hitting thier heads and waking themselves up. neither one ever attempted to climb out of the crib. I was really surprised DS2 didn't seeing how is a little dare devil.

No transistion either. We let each DS help take apart and set up the new bed and they went bed shopping with us.

We are moving the boys (5 and 3) to bunkbeds this spring so baby can have the nursery.

I moved my daughter to a toddler bed at 18 months. I didn't /don't have issues with her getting out of bed. When I put her down at night I shut the door and once she's asleep I open the door a crack so she can get out in the morning.

Re: Big Kid Bed?

All 3 of my kids moved out of their cribs at about 16-18 months old. This is when they started climbing out and my daughter even fell once. The boys moved to bunks from the crib and my daughter went to a toddler bed.
