Re: If you have a child with add, adhd or a spectrum disorder....or other disorders..

my son has adhd, impulsive. we took him to an educational psychologist. we wanted a doctor, but one who doesn't prescribe meds so that he/she wouldn't be biased by the pharmaceutical companies. this was after talking to his teachers and pedi and suspecting it ourselves for several years. We kept hoping it was just immaturity.

Psychologist. It took several visits and testing. She wrote up a long detailed report after that with her diagnosis and recommendations for treatment.

We suspect that my son has some sensory type disorder & will be going forward with an Early Intervention evaluation when I'm feeling better (had a hysterectomy last week & then got s stomach bug right after). I can't lift my little guy for another 7 weeks so we're going to try & set it up then. He also will be starting the feeding clinic but we've known about that since December.
So he's 2 & we have no formal diagnosis in the behavioral health dept but he does have a few medical diagnosis.

My 9 year old dd has generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD (following a bad accident) and was officially diagnosed by psychological evaluation 2 months after we started seeing symptoms but things went from mild to horrible over a short period so it wasn't hard to diagnose. The psych dr at Children's Specialized hospital said she is the most anxious child he's ever met or work with
Her pedi dr referred her for a psych eval at our first visit to discuss all this & to start with a therapist immediately. It took 2 months for an official diagnosis only because her anxiety was/is so bad that they had to do the evaluation in 5 separate visits. Things have gotten worse recently & I'm wondering if she may not have some sensory issues, too.
It's hard since her sensory issues are the direct opposite of ds. His need for everything loud & physical triggers her need for quiet. He head butts the wall for fun, she is afraid of how loud the water is coming out of the faucet in the bath tub.

-mom to 3 big girls (9, 12 & 18 ) & 1 little guy (26 months)

Re: If you have a child with add, adhd or a spectrum disorder....or other disorders..

Lots of docs here too.

We were already seeing a PT for some global physical delays. She referred us to an OT, who thought she might have SPD. The OT referred us to Help Me Grow.

When she outgrew Help Me Grow and we still weren't seeing any changes the pedi referred us to a developmental pedi. The developmental pedi ruled out autism and sent us to a psychologist.

That psychologist thought she had Anxiety Disorder along with Selective Mutism and possibly OCD. She left the office we were at and we went back to the developmental pedi.

Developmental pedi then gave us a provisional diagnosis of PDD-NOS along with the SM and OCD and sent us to a different psychologist.

This psychologist thinks that she has Anxiety Disorder and/or a Mood Disorder but does not feel that she has the SM and thinks the OCD is merely a side affect of the AD/MD. That's where we are at currently.

We have been seeing a therapist and/or specialist of one form or another since she was 2 months old and she is now 5y3m.

We got an ADHD dx from our Ped using input from us and an extensive survey of DS's kindergarten teacher. My husband is ADHD and DS met many of the criteria right off the bat. He's been using Concerta for about 2 years now with miraculous results--He's actually able to learn in school

Re: If you have a child with add, adhd or a spectrum disorder....or other disorders..

Lots of struggles, suspicions, questions and docs telling me nothing is wrong...

Went to a psychologist at age 6 for behavior/sensory/memory issues I thought was possible autism. Dx came back as ADHD and IQ of 80.

we put her thru a sensory integration therapy, which seemed to help a bit with her balance, coordination and anger. But her short term memory problems were getting worse.

She gets worse and develops epilepsy.

Finally at age 11 after finding a new pediatrician who said 'SOMETHING IS WRONG" and sent her to a 10 hour neuropsychologist evaluation, my dd was diagnosed NOT with ADHD or Autism spectrum like we suspected, but with severe cognitive impairment (severe mental retardation with an IQ of 45 with prognosis of getting worse due to epilepsy & the meds).

Same thing happened with some of her other problems she has had... we went to an endocrinologist for possible diabetes, but came home with a Turner's Syndrome diagnoses instead! Dx at age 7 instead of as a younger toddler, when all the symptoms/physical features were staring docs in the face.

ugh. very frustrating.

She was diagnosed with ASD at 3 years 3 months. Diagnosis was given for the school district by two speech therapists and an OT. The medical diagnosis was done at the teaching hospital by a child psychologist, developmental pediatrican, speech therapist and occupational therapist. It took 5 hours for all of them to see her and reach a conclusion.

My twins are 2 years, 4 months and were just diagnosed with autism by a developmental pediatrician. The visit was about an hour, but I filled out loads of questionnaires beforehand, and I also sent in recent evals by speech, OT, and early intervention.

DS (now 8) was diagnosed with some SID/ODD at age 5, then more ADD at age 7 which is what I have as well.

Diagnosis was by a child psychologist trained to recognize/diagnose childhood behavior disorders, including autism which is what they screened for first (even though we knew it was not that).

Testing took 3 hours, then another hour to come in for the diagnosis. I loved reading the report because my DS is extremely advanced in some areas, and they also identified trouble areas to work on or where he might need help.

We were never recommended medication but behavior modification. this is working, along with some tough parenting and diet modification. It's not easy mama!
This sounds very similar to our situation. Referred by our ped to a specialized clinic at the children's hospital that only deals with developmental issues. One-hour consult, then a week later, 3 hours of various testing and forms for us to fill out. We waited while she scored everything and got a diagnosis right away (mild ASD and anxiety). She has a PhD in Childhood Development, as well as a couple Master's degrees in kid stuff.
