Where do you buy your rain/water barrels?

I've been looking online but I can't believe they are over $100 for a chunk of recycled milk jug... seriously $115 for one of the cheapest I found??

Anyway we can put the bung in the bottom ourselves so I don't really need that feature. But where can I find an affordable barrel or two? Going to be used to water gardens only so doesn't have to be food grade, but I don't want it leeching BPA's either KWIM?

TIA!

Re: Where do you buy your rain/water barrels?

We just bought some recycled 1000 L totes off of kijiji so maybe try looking on Craigslist? We got them for $50 each, they were used to hold a natural orange peel based cleaner so we'll just pressure wash them out and they'll be good to use for the garden and as a back-up water source for us should the power go out for an extended period of time. (We have a Berkey to filter our drinking water.)

I also found some old rain barrels that you can get new at Home Depot for $100+ for $20 used, so I would just keep my eye out on Craigslist if I were you.

Unfortunatly it's hard to find much on Craigslist out here. Most people us the Uncle Henry's swap or sell it guide, and have been checking there too. One of the disadvantages to living in the boonies.
Thanks for the advice though.

Well ours aren't officially rain barrels, but dh altered them just a little. He got them on craigslist from a cheese maker. They are 265 gallon, food grade square bins. I believe they already had a hose spout, but he had to add a hole for our rain gutter. He bought 2 and is expecting a 3rd one when the guy is done with it. I think he bought them both for $50 but I don't know for sure.

These are $60, says the price includes shipping (I don't know if that means to anywhere, they were listed in my local, Des Moines, CL) and they accept PP.

Re: Where do you buy your rain/water barrels?

Ours is a 50 gallon garbage can it is one with wheels on it, in the plumbing dept we found a kit make to attach the spigot. We have it propped up about a foot on a wood frame DH built. This year we want to add a second one next to it using an over flow kit. Our gets filled really fast.

Here is a neat idea on how to make attached rain barrels out of garbage cans.
