I don't get why anyone would FF 20-40 lbs when there are many seats (less $$ than this) that RF past 40lbs. I also don't get the giant uncomfortable shock absorber against their body - safe maybe, but would you want to be squished flat like those roller-coaster harnesses for hours in the car?

No harness. The shield fits snugly to the body and holds the child in, up to 40 pounds. After that you take the shield out and it's a regular belt positioning booster seat.

There are only two seats currently that RF past 40 pounds, and one on the way. None are cheap.

I think it's kind of cool, but not sure I would get one myself. The idea put forth by the company is that this foam shield is AS SAFE as rear-facing because the head and shoulders move forward as a unit. I'd have to see some numbers or something to believe that, but it could be a very good alternative for someone who had a very small back seat or a tall adult in the family.

I've seen numbers, and it is nowhere near as safe as rear facing. Also, it does lower neck strain, ever so slightly, but it does so by increasing abdominal loads. The forces have to go somewhere, and when you lower them in one area you increase them in another.

Not everyone RFs to the max of their seats and as pp pointed out there are very few seats that RF past 40lbs. This is a niche seat. Just because you wouldn't use it doesn't mean it isn't perfect for someone else. Kids also aren't "squished flat" anymore so than in a harness.
