Out of curiosity...

Does anyone know what determines how big a baby will be at birth? Now I know there are other factors like if the mother has gest. diabetes and nutrition but I am curious, do mothers typically birth the same weight range of babies? My dh keeps claiming I'm going to be carrying some huge 10lb baby because that is what he was born at. My other children from a previous relationship were 6lb 3oz, 6lb 12oz, and 5lb 12oz. I don't remember if I had ever found out how much my previous partner weighed at birth and I couldn't ask him anyway (deceased). Soo... does anyone know if a baby is born around a certain poundage based on mother and father's genetics or is baby born typically what the mother's body can carry? Or maybe a combination of both?

Re: Out of curiosity...

Ive heard that baby weight is *generally* based on what mothers birth weight was and her family history. This would hold true with myself and ds. I was 6lbs 3oz, ds was 6lbs 8.5oz. His father was 10lbs 11oz.

My mom was 7lbs. My moms family does not make "big" babies. I dont think theres been an 8lber anywhere in the last couple of generations

I have heard mixed things. I was around 8.5 lb (I can't recall exactly a the moment). My first was 7 lb 3 oz at 40 weeks 3 days. Second was 7 lb 8 oz at 39 weeks, and third was 7 lb 4 oz at 37 weeks 6 days. I'm guessing this baby will be between 7.5 and 8.5 lb.

My husband and I were both 8.5 lbs. my first was 8 and my 2nd was 9 so it evens out for my family. I would take your weight and his at birth and figure out the average...that's what you should count on.

Big babies run in my family. I was 8lb 10oz. We've never had a baby born under 8-8.5lb, with the exception of my grandfather who was born really prematurely for his time.
DH's family is more average. They've all typically been in the 7lb range.

DS1 was 8lb 6oz and DS2 was 9lb 7oz.
