What's the current recs for the umbilical stump?

Anyone know? I know at one time it was to put rubbing alcohol on it, other time was leave it alone..what's the current rec?

Just want to have any needed supplies at home so we don't have to out for them.

I was told either rubbing alcohol or not was fine for dd 19 months ago. Our ped said neither way changes how long it takes to fall off. I used the alcohol cause i honestly think the lil stumps smell a little bit if you don't

Apologizing in advance for iPhone typos/autocorrect

No alcohol, just wash gently with the rest of the bath, no rubbing or aggravating.

I'[ve heard both... but I will use alchol on ours just cuase I think it helps with the gooeyness of it.... My last kiddo took FOREVER to fall off... like 3 weeks plus the nitrate treatment from the dr. 2 times... my others came off pretty fast.. hopefully this one is pretty fast...

I remember doing the nitrite treatment w/2 of ours. I think I will go with the alcohol as I do recall ds2 got some icky goo (like, I went to the ped to make sure it wasn't infected.

We just leave it alone and make sure it stays dry..alcohol always leaves it really irritated and red on my babies..

It's totally up to you....doesn't make a difference either way. I'll probably use the alcohol.

Re: What's the current recs for the umbilical stump?

I only used water with DD, but my sis with a 7 week old DS used alcohol that the dr. recommended.

Re: What's the current recs for the umbilical stump?

I have found (comparing care of 3 children's umbilical stumps) that alcohol actually kept it wet and it took a lot longer to fall off (plus there is a chance the alcohol can be absorbed into baby's system), and the fastest cord to fall off was the one I just kept dry (wiping around the stump with a dry cotton swab several times a day). That cord stump was also not painted with anything at birth either and fell off in just a few days. The alcohol wiped stump took a couple weeks to fall off and was very stinky and wet looking before finally falling off.

Re: What's the current recs for the umbilical stump?

We just used a dry cotton swab around the area at diaper changes if needed. My babies lost their cord stump within the first week to 10 days. I was told that alcohol was not necessary by our paediatrician.
