My daughter has had plenty of ear infections. If she is in really rough shape, I start the ABx right away. It stinks to know deep down that she *may* not have needed them, but my doctor is pretty "anti" antibiotic, so I trust her when she feels they are warranted. However, if I can, I like to wait 24-48 hours to see if it improves on its own. I am able to do this now more that she is older and is able to communicate better (and cooperate better for exams, taking temperatures, etc) a baby I didn't wait. Sometimes it improves spontaneously, sometimes it doesn't. I am virtually deaf in my right ear due to repeated and prolonged ear infections as a child, so while I don't like giving antibiotics at all, I tend to be more aggressive with ear infections due to my own history. Unfortunately I think DD1 inherited my bad ears =( But fortunately she hasn't developed any resistance to amoxicillin yet.
