Breastmilk Instead of Saline

Forget about infant saline dops or spray.

Forget the aspirator.

Forget sucking boogers via strange tubular contraptions.

It is all about the breasmilk. Again. Is there anything this superfood can't do?

I asked my pediatrician about infant saline spray and she looked at me and said, "You can, but we usually reommend breastmilk." Man, how I wish I'd gotten a good look at my face at that very moment. I must have eyed her as if she'd turned into a zombie and sprouted fairy wings.

The way she explained it made sense. Infants have tiny nasal passages that are lined with mucus. Stiking aspirators up there irritates them, making them smaller. By using about 6 drops of breastmilk per nostril instead of saline + aspirator, you are a) using something that tastes familiar, so when they sputter or swallow it, it is less upsetting, and b) coating their passage ways with all that antibody goodness breastmilk is known for. Also, a lot of tiemes the congestion is deeper than aspirators can reach, and the breastmilk can get to that.

I was skeptical but my dd does get congested and cries from the saline drops. I tried the breastmilk drops tonight and viola! No crying, no congestion. I haven't yet tested it on major stuffiness but I can't believe how well and simple it works. Another boon about breastmilk is that she didn't fight it nearly as much as she does saline.

Anyone else know of this or pratie it?

When DD is stuffy, she starts nursing, pulls off, tries to nurse again, unlatches, etc. which usually leads to me spraying milk all over her, including in her nose. So although not intentionally, yes I've tried it, and yes, it works very well!

Nothing can compare to breastmilk. We have used it to cure an arm rash, pink eye, colds for the other children (drank from a cup), etc etc etc. I wish I had the energy to pump forever.

When my DS was congested as a baby, breastmilk used to run out of his nose while he was nursing. I never had to squirt any up there, it did the job itself. I always thought that was pretty cool.

Same here. DD gets a bit overwhelmed by letdown when she's stuffy, and it gets up her nose from inside her mouth, and does the job itself. Awesome stuff

Breastmilk is wonderful.

I do want to caution you though about using too much. If baby snorts it into her lungs, she can wind up with with pneumonia.

Would once a day be considered too much?
