Baby Clayton is here!

The last few weeks of my pregnancy have been difficult with constant contractions, high blood pressure, phantom itching, and my own personal struggles with insomnia. Thursday, I was on my third trip of the week to L&D for monitoring, this time for high blood pressure, and expected to be sent home yet again. Two nights before I had had painful contractions every four minutes all night long, and I was getting worried and discouraged, especially in light of my fear of cholestasis. DH and I were surprised when my bloodwork indicated pre-eclampsia and I was told we'd be going ahead with a repeat C-section three hours later. They would have done it sooner, but I had eaten. I was thrilled and nervous, DH seemed like he was going to freak out but he went home, took a shower, saw the girls, packed a few things and came back ready to go.

Clayton Rivers was born April 19, 2012 at 7:50 PM. He was 6lbs 4 oz. and 19.75 inches long. The C-section went much better than the last one, but I was nauseous the whole time and actually threw up on the table which was really unpleasant. Everyone was great, the anesthesiologist spent almost the entire surgery fanning my face which helped me not freak out and helped the sick feeling. I also was able to have a doula, which really helped especially once DH left with the baby and I still had to through the second half of surgery.

In recovery I had the shakes really bad just like last time but interestingly they stopped immediately once I got my baby in my arms. I was thrilled that I could try to nurse right then and there. That night I laid in bed ALL night long holding my baby and just looked at him. It was the most wonderful feeling. Very different from the girls when I came out super groggy and over-dosed on IV fluid, plus they were in the NICU and I couldn't even see them for hours.

The next day the drugs were really doing a number on me and I was so groggy that I was passing in and out of consciousness in the middle of conversations with doctors, nurses, friends, family, photographer, etc. The midwives are uncertain as to whether or not I really had pre-e or possibly cholestasis (although the test did come back negative). We were able to come home on Sunday, but yesterday baby had to get a Bili blanket for jaundice. He is nursing well and is back up to 6lbs 2oz which is great as far as I'm concerned.

The girls are LOVING the big sister gig, and are being very sweet. They are having some slight behavioral issues from their schedule being so different and also from lack of sleep as they got to stay up very late the first few nights. DH has been truly wonderful, so sweet and taken care of almost everything. I'm also so grateful that my parents were able to come and take care of the girls and the house while we were gone.

Here are a few pictures!
