Redness and Irritation from Cloth. Help!

My son is 2 and his penis gets very red and irritated after wearing cloth for a couple of days. We keep having to put him in disposables for a day or two until it calms down and I am tired of buying disposables.

We mostly use MEOS with wool and sometimes Goodmamas with an Imse Vimse cover. I wash in Rockin' Green.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks!

He may need stay dry. Sounds like his skin is irritated by the wetness which wouldn't be the case in sposies. My son tends to get red on his boy parts when not in stay dry. We still use cotton diapers sometimes just not all the time. Maybe you could use stay dry 50% of the time.
I would try a stay dry diaper like a pocket or add a fleece liner to his diapers. I know motherease makes stay dry doublers.

Sounds like a wetness issue. My son has the same issue with cloth so we just use fleece liners in our diapers to keep it more dry. I also change more frequently. Sadly, my sons skin stays so much nicer in sposies. But, I keep using cloth.

I agree with him needing stay dry, some kids' skin just can't handle the wetness. Try lining the diapers with some fleece liners and see if that helps, and change more frequently.

My first thought was the detergent. I haven't used RNG, but I've heard some babies do react to it. I've had my LO react to a detergent before, and it turned her a solid red.

So glad you asked this! We use the exact same combo (meos & wool) sometimes PUL, and we struggle with redness about every other week. I don't use rockin green though. Right now I'm using homemade detergent, but normally use Ecos. We have soft water so I've lessened the detergent but he still gets irritated and red.

I think we are going to buy some pockets and see how he does. I remember when my dd had a horrible rash that I couldn't beat. I got her out of cotton and into fuzzi bunz and we never had a rash again. I just really didn't want to do polyester anymore, but I may go back to it.

Re: Redness and Irritation from Cloth. Help!

You could try some cornstarch based baby powder. That helped my DS. Stay dry material causes rashes so after talking with the ped. she suggested powder. It draws moisture from the the skin so it sort of does the same thing as stay dry material to an extent.

Re: Redness and Irritation from Cloth. Help!

oh another small thing check the size setting of the diapers (if possible) My DD can wear here thirsties AIO on eaither medium or large setting. Mediums looks best and probably are the best fit but the just barely loose fit of the large setting has tremendously helped calm and prevent her constant heat rash.. The one flip other than the sight bulkier look is if shes has really messy diaper we risk a small blow out but I'll take that to constant rash.
