Usually first babies are longer labors and 2nd + babies are quite a bit quicker. Your body just knows what to do already! I haven't seen a correlation between EDD and length of labor in my practice. DD2 was born 9 days 'late' and I was in labor for about 8 hours. She was my first labor as I never labored with DD1, I had an emerg section at 31 weeks. DS was born 5 days 'early' and I was in labor for about 3 hours.

Re: Overdue babies and short labors

First came on her due date and labor was 5 hours.
#2 was 1 week overdue and 2.5 hours.
I think it has more to do with babies position and my pelvis, though. Both labors were almost the same, just that the second was more intense and faster.

Re: Overdue babies and short labors

I guess I'm the exception. I went into early/prodromal labor with DS the day after his due date. That lasted 2 full nights and a full day (contractions as close together as every 2 minutes). Active labor started the 3rd day and lasted 26.5 hours, ended on the 4th day with a c-section.

Re: Overdue babies and short labors

I have 2 babies go overdue. The first time (baby #3) was a 4 hour labor and the second time (baby #5) was a 12 hour labor. I actually had shorter labors with baby #1 and #2 (who were both early) than I did with #5 who was late.

Basically it went something like this:

Baby #1- 39w4d and 6 hour labor
Baby #2- 38w2d and 5 hour labor
Baby #3- 40w2d and 4 hour labor
Baby #4- 34w4d and 21.5 hour labor
Baby #5- 40w1d and 12 hour labor

Re: Overdue babies and short labors

My 3rd baby was induced at 42 weeks.... Took 8 hours from the time pit was started to the time he was born.... Still better than the 25 and 21 hour labors with the older 2 (which were pit augmented) both at around 38 weeks with SROM....

# 1 was 42 weeks, 6 hour labor

#2 was 36w, 2.5 hours

#3 was 38w 4 hours

All from first indication of labor to baby in arms - not all active contracting labor.

Re: Overdue babies and short labors

First baby was 3 weeks overdue, 19 hour labor. Second baby was born on due date, 8 hour labor from IV to baby out...went from 6cm to baby out in less than five minutes. Third baby wasn't overdue, had to be induced early due to pre-e...labor was approx. 20 hours from IV to baby out, but I wasn't dilated or effaced at all when we started the induction...again went from 6cm to baby out in less than five minutes though.

I think a lot of it has to do with baby's position...with my first I pushed for almost three hours, but he was sunny side up with his arm wrapped around his head. The other two were positioned very well and once contractions really started getting going on their own (around 4-5 cm), labor went very fast.
