waldorf crush, need help

So, I think I'm in love with Waldorf dolls. I know I can't afford a "real" one, so I've been thinking of making one for my daughter. She'll be 2 in December. We already have a few dolls, some I may donate to our church nursery, but the Waldorfs are so stinkin cute and I would hope she'd love it best! So, I'm new to sewing, but my projects with patterns and directions come out rather well I think. Tutorials leave a little to be desired for me. My question is have any of you used the packs of supplies and directions and how did it go? I feel this is the most economical option since I don't have tons of cash to sink into supplies. Also, if a doll is to be loved and lived with, is there a preferred type of hair? Or if you think doing it from scratch is best, please direct me to some good directions!! thanks
