If you make your own laundry soap..

I am really considering doing this but have some questions..

What recipe do you use?

How do you store it? (Can I store it in my garage where my washer/dryer is? will the heat in the summer ruin it?)

What do you store it in? I don't any empty liquid laundry bottles?

Any other advice?

Re: If you make your own laundry soap..

I've been making my own laundry detergent for about a year now. This is the recipe I use:

http://blog.wantingwhatyouhave.com/2...detergent.html

I use Fels Naptha, not Ivory. I'm not sure how much it matters, except that Fels Naptha is sold as laundry soap and Ivory is sold as body soap. (Again, I don't know if it matter that much.)

I store my detergent in a big, old coffee container. It's on my screened in porch so it gets exposed to some heat, but I don't know if it gets hotter than our garage. I guess you could put it in your garage and see what happens.

Other advice... I have hard water so I usually add a tablespoon of baking soda to my wash, too. And 1\4 c of vinegar because I hate fabric softener. The lady on this blog is amazing and has tons of tips about laundry, cooking, and everything, as well. Good luck!

I also make this version. Either with Fels Naptha or Zote (Mexican laundry soap). Zote is cheaper and bigger than Fels Naptha and works just as well. I store it in an ice cream pail with the lid on in the basement.

I make the same thing but we use Ivory. DS have allergies. It works great. I store it in a empty big formula can outside on a shelf above the washer and it doesn't melt.

Yep, that is the same recipe I use, but I use Yardley soap, because I like a little scent in my laundry. :P

Interesting! I wonder if I could squeeze a little lemon juice into it for a scent? I like my clothes to smell clean...

Re: If you make your own laundry soap..

I just made some today. I made a batch with my leftover half of Zote bar, and a batch using Kirks castile bar.

2 cups grated soap
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda

I make it fine in a food processor and store in a glass mason jar I had laying around. Bigger batches I store in just a plastic tupperware bowl and lid.

I notice my clothes smell nice and fresh out of the washer and then like nothing out of the dryer. Not sure how to add scent that stays around. I don't mind though.

I don't know about lemon juice, but I know a lot of people use essential oils to give their detergent a good smell. I personally like the smell of my Fels Naptha, but you could probably do a google search to learn about the oils.
