Breech, posterior home waterbirth

Every labor is different, at least that's what I've always heard. Now that I've had two pregnancies and labors I know this to be very true!

This pregnancy I didn't get any contractions or braxton hicks that I could feel though I had them for months during the first pregnancy. With our first I labored during the day and this time labor began at night so I had no sleep. I did my best to relax between the intense contractions so as to not exhaust myself.

Throwing a blanket over myself during each contraction to keep from being distracted by the midwives prepping and the bright light. DH is rubbing my back.

With Zoa I had a pain free labor and delivery.... This one every contractions hurt my back and front, lower belly. My wonderful husband would come to me for each contraction to rub my back or squeeze my hips together. He had it so easy the first time, all he needed to do was hold my hand. After several hours of laboring the tub was finally ready for me to get into... Sinking into that water instantly revived me and my 2 minutes of rest between contractions felt like 20.

Now that I was squatting in the tub I was getting pushes urges that I could barely resist (with our first I didn't get any pushing urge). My husband was squeezing my hips as I leaned over the tub moaning, groaning, grunting and beating a rhythm with an open palm against the tub or Glenn's leg. At one point I was coaching my husband, "squeeze, you can do it. keep squeezing"

Oh ya... I forgot to mention that our little one was posterior breech! So the midwife checked to see what position the baby was in (still posterior) and if I have cervical lip. Still a bit of lip there so I had to go a couple contractions doing my best not to push. The baby dropped what felt like a good 4 inches at once and I couldn't help but start to push. And scream!! It's amazing that the first birth was so peaceful yet here I am 3 years later in the same body, doing the same activity screaming at the top of my lungs. I bit down on a washcloth which helped so much getting me to focus and not scream as much.

Thank you dear washcloth! DH squeezing my hips during each contraction

My midwife was standing in the tub at this point to make sure she was close as she knew that baby would need assistance should she not turn on herself. I had a hand down feeling the baby the entire time and it was quite the experience feeling a butt come out first and then the legs. My midwife gets down into the tub to gently turn baby as she was coming out, to prevent her chin from getting caught on the pubic bone. Her arms and head came out effortlessly and the midwife put her in my arms. The cord was short, which may have been what prevented her from turning as there were times that it felt like she tried to turn and couldn't quite make it all the way.

Husband's arm squeezing my hips and of course... Baby's little feet

What a breech baby's head shape looks like. She has two lightly raised ridges (only detectable by hand) running the length of the top of her head where she was pressing up against my ribs. Since the head doesn't get molded by the pressure on the cervix, baby's head came out like it has been in the womb.

A little more blood was in the tub than they like to see so they rubbed my uterus a bit to get contractions going. My vitals were all good so loosing a little more blood than normal wasn't effecting me badly though they asked I wait a day to shower so they I get my energy back. Honestly, all I wanted to do was go to sleep! I wasn't exhausted but I'd been laboring all night on no sleep so I was ready for bed.

As I relaxed on the couch my husband woke up our 3 year old daughter to come meet her baby sister. I would have loved to have her at the birth but I said not to wake her as it would be scary to wake at 5am to see mommy screaming her head off and I needed husband's attention on me... or rather my hips. Zoamore was so happy to see her baby sister. She was intrigued watching her breastfeed and tried to help her latch on correctly. Zoa has been giving her kisses, doing her best to put prefolds on her, snuggling and singing to her. Little girls are so sweet!

I let our baby girl latch on by myself this time as opposed to with Zoa I was taught so shove her little head on my boob and breastfeeding was miserable those first few weeks. Liviya has a really good latch, opens wide and loves to eat!

The midwife checked my tears and I was shocked to find that I didn't tear at all, just a small patch of grazing. Our little girl received an apgar score of 10, which is awesome considering she was breech as they usually need suctioning and help breathing.

Our second daughter was born at 5am, weighing 8lb 5oz, 20 inches long with a 15cm head. It took us two days to name her and the next day we changed it. Liviya Ann, we love you!

I love this wool gown, which makes cloth diapering that much easier. I don't think I'll be using any other woolies unless going in the car. This time I started ECing on day one and I caught 1 pee and 1 poop in the potty. Since I didn't bring that many CDs with me, every diaper counts!

What a beautiful birth story! Thank you so much for sharing it, and your pictures, with us. I have always been curious what it would feel like to birth a breech baby. Congratulations! She is beautiful.

Congratulations! I understand what you mean about the second labor being more painful that the first! My second was much more intense than my first. Great birth story, and have fun with EC- did you EC your first also? We're on the second round, but with a boy this time
