Hi Mommas!
My DS is 1 month old. He is EBF and up until now has been doing great. But the past few days he has projectile spit up and has been extremely fussy after he eats. He has also been wanting to eat every hour and a half to two hours (he usually goes 3 or 4 hours between feedings). I'm wondering if he is going through a growth spurt (hence the constant need to nurse) or if I have been eating too much dairy and he has a sensitivity or allergy to it, or both. I have cut dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream) out of my diet :-( but I haven't seen much improvement yet (it has only been a few days). I know that many foods contain milk in the ingredients. Should I go completely dairy free and cut out any food with milk in it? Is there any way to tell for sure if he has an allergy? Can they do allergy blood tests on an infant?

Re: Massive spit-ups: Dairy allergy?
Both of my babies have had crazy puke-splosions when I ate dairy. I would cut out all dairy for at least a month and see if it gets better. You should notice some improvement in the first week, but it can take weeks for the dairy to get out of your system entirely, and then longer for it to be out of the baby's system.
Does he have a rash? How's his poop? Is it at all green and/or mucousy? That's another sign of dairy sensitivity.

Re: Massive spit-ups: Dairy allergy?
He does not have a rash. We use a lot of diaper rash cream since we CD to prevent any rashes. His poop varies from yellow to green, sometimes very green. Not mucousy. Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on it and see if I notice any patterns.

Re: Massive spit-ups: Dairy allergy?
My DS just turned 1 month on Saturday and has been super fussy and spitting up/having trouble pooping for 2 weeks. about 10 days ago I started an elimination diet (no wheat, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, citrus or nuts) and I just started seeing a slight improvement 2 days ago. If you suspect dairy I would suggest going completely dairy free for at least 3 weeks to see if he improves. Allergy testing is only good once they are 3-4 years old and if there is a delayed reaction the tests are innacurate. I know several moms with kids who tested "no allergy" or "mild" but their children throw up profusely with dairy intake.. so it's not reliable. I would stick with a dairy free or elimination diet! Good luck!

The green poop could be from too much foremilk, but it is something to look for with dairy sensitivities, too. Good luck!

Keep in mind that spitting up(even a lot) is very normal. Lots of babies also have acid reflux (which could account for the spit up and fussiness also since LO is eating more probably because of a growth spurt that could account for the spitting up as well) due to muscles and it usually gets better around 6 months. My son spit up so much I had to carry around multiple burp rags to have on my shoulder at all times as well as multiple changes of clothes for both of us. I had to warn people before they help him about the spit up lol it got much better at around 5 months thank goodness. Hopefully it gets better though, spit up and a fussy baby is no fun

http://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/reflux/ Also I didn't see you mention if you feed on both sides each feeding or what, but you MAY have oversupply which could cause your baby to overeat. With my DD it also helped to feed on one side per feeding. For a while I would stick with one side for 2 hours. I would feed her on cue, but wouldn't switch sides until the 2 hours were up. I've heard of mom's need to go 3-4 hours. That way baby can comfort suck without getting unwanted milk. HTH!

Re: Massive spit-ups: Dairy allergy?
UPDATE: We have been off dairy for about two weeks now. DS is a MUCH happier baby!! Thanks everyone for your help. Looks like I will be missing out on my favorite dairy products for a while.
I'm off to Trader Joe's to get some soy milk and some dairy-free foods for me.
