No U/S until 18 weeks?

It is the policy with every midwife/ob I have seen. With my first I got one early through a special organization to check everything because I was only 18. I don't remember there exact reasoning, but that was not with my ob. With my second I knew down to the day when I conceived, so no scan until the anatomy scan. Number three, I'd had longer than normal cycles, so we did one just to be sure of dates, despite having a decent idea. That one was done in my midwife's office with the portable machine and was super low quality. With number four, we were trying not to get pregnant and I had not even had one period yet (whoops), so I had NO clue. This time, my cycles were really irregular, so there was a whole month window I could have been due in. So, I think my first was because I was considered high risk? But not done at the doctors, and I've had three dating scans. You could always say you weren't sure of your dates after all and see if they'd do one.

I didn't have an u/s til 18-20 wks with my first two. And that was the only u/s for those two. With my third I had one around 7 wks cause I had bleeding, then again at 12 wks to make sure everything was still ok cause I was still bleeding, and then the 18-20 wks u/s. With this one I am having one done around 10-12 wks for dating and then around 18-20 wks.

With my first pregnancy I had a quickie u/s done in office because the dr found the heartbeat right away and he thought I might have had my dates off. Turns out he just happened to get the doppler right on top of a teeny tiny baby that was chilling up front in my uterus. I was not quite 10 weeks.

With my second pregnancy I had one within days of finding out I was pregnant because I hadn't had AF yet and we didn't know when I had conceived. At that point I was 5w3d and there was nothing to be seen so I had another two weeks later and saw a tiny baby. Said tiny baby is running through my kitchen screaming "BEANS BEANS BEANS BEANS!". Oye.

So, unless there's a dating concern or a medical reason (such as miscarriage) there will be no early or extra u/s with the practice I see. Unnecessary u/s have been banned in my state. That mostly refers to the "recreational" 3d/4d scans at independent establishments but it also has the drs scared to perform u/s that aren't warranted by medical necessity.

My doc's office doesn't do one until the 20 week anatomy scan unless there is some reason for it. I happen to have had an early one with both of my pregnancies (with DS I just happened to have spotting while I was AT the doctor's office for my 12 week appointment, so they sent me down to check it out and this time I had very early bleeding after intercourse at like 3w6d so they did an 8 week u/s to check viability). I don't think it's out of line at all that you aren't scheduled for an u/s until then. Just annoying that everyone around you gets to see the bean earlier than you

I have never heard of an OB waiting until then to do one. Is it because they don't even have one in the office?

My OB won't do one until then.. They offer the 10-12 week one to check for downs. But not all insurances pay for it. I opt not to do one just because the test could be wrong and it wouldn't change my mind on having the baby. no reason to get stressed to me. A friend of mine goes to the same OB. She gets more tests and u/s than I do but she has a higher risk pregnancy. I think it just depends on the person.

DDC, but neither OB I have seen offers them until 18-20wks, unless there is a problem. Unfortunately, I have had problems early on both times(SCH), so I got them at 8-9wks, when I would have otherwise had to wait.

DDC-- With all three pregnancies my OB does a dating scan at 8 weeks, even if you are absolutly positive on your dates, the 12 week test (if you wan it) and then the 20 week anatamy scan.

You can still get 3D/4D Ultrasounds in CT. I was thinking about going to A Tiny Perspective in Glastonbury. When I called I asked about that law and they said they have a doctor on staff who can legally request an ultrasound. So, they get around the law.

I know the exact date I conceived so there's no question about timing. I'm not too worried about it; I just wasn't sure if it was normal. They did the dating u/s with DS because I wasn't sure about dates. Oh well! Thanks!
