Balcony garden?

City girl, high rise building here. I've started with a tomato plant and basil, I'd like to add more. I noticed strawberries in hanging baskets at our local nursery today, has anyone had luck with them?

What else could I do in pots? Thanks!

Re: Balcony garden?

Back when I lived in apts, the only room for a garden was on my balcony. I had great luck with smaller tomato varieties. I've also grown eggplant, peppers, basil, and cilantro. I still have my lemon tree in a big pot. I never grew strawberries...sorry.

Although it's a pain, the bigger the container, the better. The pots don't dry out as quickly when they hold lots of soil. Try not to use the black plastic 1 or 5 gallon containers from the nursery. Because they are black, they get really hot. Put dishes or trays under each planting container so that the balcony doesn't stain or rot. It also keeps the extra water from running off.

Thank you! I'm going to try to look into adding peppers! Good tip on the containers, I hadn't thought of any of that!
