What couldn't you live without when you had a newborn?

A decent carrier. With DD we had a kangaroo sling she lived in. This time we have that, an Ergo with infant insert and a moby. I got so much done hands free. I loved the halo sleep sacks for winter and fall. We did use the light weight ones for spring. A bottle sterilizer if you will be hand washing bottles. The nosefrieda nose suction thing, a forehead thermometer and rectal (rectal is more accurate for when you need it to be 100% but the head one is much easier and can be done when asleep).

I love the california baby and mustela products and registered for them. And a variety of cloth safe diaper creams. Even babies r us now has the bum genius diaper sprayer, I'd add that if you don't have one and a bunch of wet bags and a pail if you need one.

Couldn't have lived without: nursing pads, carrier (for nb I would get a wrap like Moby), burp cloths, the waterproof pads that go ON TOP OF the changing table pad (we changed them sooo often), swing. Sound machine - we got one that's a clock radio with sound machine options, and an ipod dock, so we use it ALL the time and it will be useful for ever. lanolin for your boobs and Polysporin (not neosporin) in case of cracking/bleeding, a copy of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

We had a bottle warmer and never used it. DH realized that DD was totally okay with room temp :-) And DD hated the bouncy seat. I wouldn't invest in a swing or bouncy seat - borrow, or try out at someone elses's house to make sure YOUR LO likes it first.
